Advice please, VW Campervan engine
We have a 1972 Bay Window Campervan (1800 cc) and need to get a new or reconditioned engine for it.
Can anyone recommend a reliable supplier, and is there anything we ought to be looking out for? Equally, is there anywhere we should not go?
We have someone who can fit it for us, just need to purchase the engine.
Thanks in advance

You should be able to get a discount if you are any vw club member.0 -
Thanks for your reply, it doesn't appear they have anything bigger than a 1600 though.
We have been suggested The Engine Shop and EliteVW, does anyone have any thoughts on these?"If you can dream it, you can do it". Walt Disney0 -
Don't know them but

appear to have the right engine, and they're a good company0 -
As current converters and importers, maybe Danbury may be able to advise or offer you one they have 'lying around'?!?:A Luke 6:38 :AThe above post is either from personal experience or is my opinion based on the person God has made me and the way I understand things. Yep, unless you particularly want to keep it original I’d certainly be looking into a more modern engine.
It’s a reasonably well trodden path with the parts/knowledge readily available to fit Audi engines (petrol & diesel) or Subaru EJ engines which covers the range from fuel sipping diesels up to 350+ bhp tyre shredders.
Google is your friend but as a starting point try…..

Thanks everyone, we would love to put a more modern engine in there but always thought this would be a LOT more expensive than putting in a recon or even a new old stock engine.
We haven't really researched it, but weren't expecting to replace the engine right now, and the van is currently undriveable at the garage so we don't have a lot of time"If you can dream it, you can do it". Walt Disney0 -
I would have thought it would be easier to find a modern engine rather than a replacement original. Research time.0

Nothing wrong with fitting a brand new engine, all the benefits of better economy and power without the emmissions-rated tax to worry about. Was thinking of doing the same thing to a Mondeo.Never Knowingly Understood.
