Your brother's circumstances don't seem to fit the standard form but it may still be possible. I had a car stolen with a personal reg on it - (later recovered) I asked the police did they know if I could keep the reg, and they said I'd have to wait two years (i think it was 2 yrs) but that yes, I would be able to. So there must be situations not covered by the form that still let you keep the number. Good luck.0 -

If they expired within the last 12 months and SORN was declared straight away then you can still transfer/retain the registration mark.
Tax expired 31 Dec 09 and car went straight on a sorn
MOT Expired April 2010

Fill out the V317 form for either a transfer or retention. Put in the details of the last tax disc (if known).
When you send it off enclose the last MOT and letter stating SORN was declared on tax expiry, along with logbook/V5C and fee.
