You can transfer the number plate to another car by filling out a V317 form. - go to the end of the page for details and how to get a form

Actually, I believe that the car needs to be taxed in order to transfer the numberplate. Whilst you can tax it, then transfer the plate, then claim back your tax it will have to be insured in order to be taxed. Is the car still insured?

It also needs a valid MOT to get the tax.

"However, if the vehicle is not taxed, you can still apply to retain provided:
    • there is no break between the date the tax disc runs out and the start of the SORN
    • and the tax disc run out no more than 12 months before the date you apply"
So no break between SORN and end of tax disc you should be fine..

If you follow it through, looks like as long as the vehicle is a TYPE that needs an MOT (doesnt say it had to BE mot'd) and has been taxed in the past 12 months, the v317 is all you'll need.

Have a look at a V778/1 Retention form, I think that may be what you need when you're not moving it directly between cars, for example if you are scrapping the car which the plate is currently registered to. I can't find it on the DVLA website so cannot provide a link

What if you have a car that has been sorn'ed for several years?
    Can you still transfer?

OP when did tax and MOT expire? and was SORN declared immediately after tax expired?

If they expired within the last 12 months and SORN was declared straight away then you can still transfer/retain the registration mark.

mikey72 - if it's been SORN'd for years then it would need to be taxed and MOT'd to take part in plate transfer/retention

As flutterby said, you will need to MOT and tax the car and you will be able to retain or transfer the plate.

If this is not possible, then the plate is gone forever (I know, it happened to me, I even took it right to Swansea pleading extenutating circumstances and they still said no).
