Problems with a wireless mouse

I wonder if anyone may be able to help me out. My father has a MESH computer recently bought, it's my brothers'. He enters password but cursor won't move so he can execute the command. He doesn't know anything about computers other than the info left by my brother. Anyone got any suggestions. I haven't even seen the computer so can't provide info etc other than above. Perhaps batteries maybe, don't know?? How long do batteries last in a wireless mouse if used continuously? Any suggestions etc very much appreciated. Thank you.

  • Cheap ones don't last terribly long

It is probably the batteries, remember to link them to the "thingy" by pushing the little button on the "thingy" and the button on the bottom of the mouse and if the keyboard is wireless too you need to link both when changing batteries in one.

Thanks for your quick reply. I haven't got a clue about wireless mice, I've got a conventional plug in wired up one. I would imagine the batteries would be rechargeable AA ones. I'm going over tomorrow to have a look to see if I can sort it out for my dad. What's the "thingy", I'm totally lost about this linking you're talking about. I do appreciate your reply, I just don't have a clue about wireless rats. :-)

  • As no techie people have popped in the "thingy" (about the size and shape of a mouse) plugs into the space where you would plug in a conventional keyboard and mouse via the purple and green ends.

Both the keyboard and mouse need to be linked to this each time you change batteries on either or both the mouse and keyboard by first pressing the button on the top of the "thingy" and then using a pen or pencil pressing the tiny buttons on the base of the mouse and keyboard.

Perhaps some helpful techie person will come in and give a better explantation and even a name to the "thingy"

    :)
  • I'd call the 'thingy' a receiver as it receives the radio signal from the mouse.

Some (most?) plug into the USB port rather than the keyboard and mouse ports

    Thank you kind sir :)

You know I thought after I posted that, that some are USB but mine wasn't.

LOL. It's the wireless receiver for the mouse, but I have a Microsoft one and you needed to press the button when first installed 3yrs ago but I've never had to press it since and the batteries only last about 6mths. But I change them as soon as I get a warning. Perhaps the button needs pressing if you let them get completely flat.

I'd look at two things. It could possibly be the batteries, or it may be 'out of channel'. A wireless mouse can operate on different channels to work. You normally find a very small button on the bottom of the receiver, and one on the bottom of the mouse. I would press the receiver one first (I use a pen to do this), hold the mouse within range of the receiver. Then press the one on the bottom of the mouse. This can reset the channel that they use, and make sure they are both on the same one.

One obvious thing to check, is if there is a red light showing on the underside of the mouse when it is lifted off the desk. No red light points to the batteries. On mine when the batteries are changed, the small button on the receiver needs to be pressed to synchronise it. The button on the underside of the mouse changes the channel each time that it is pressed.

That's a good point. Different makes/models obviously have different methods of setting the channels. A read of the instructions for how to do this, or post the make/model here (someone else may use the same mouse), could point out how to set the channel on that specific mouse.
