Dyson do fixed-price servicing on their kit, can't remember the prices off-hand, but do know that it includes collection/delivery and parts.

It could be the belt, might be worth a change, it can't hurt.

The belt on out 10 year old DC01 kept going a few years back, Dyson sent an engineer out to have a look, turns out the little spindle bit the belt goes over had rusted slightly thanks to us going over wet patches on the carpet, and that kept breaking the belt. He sanded it down, showed me how to do the same if it happened again and that was it, no charge.

The things still running perfectly now. We use it upstairs and have a dyson ball for downstairs (they're much lighter and easier for my disabled mother to use).

Why has nobody sued them yet?

No loss of suction? Mine does all the time. No idea why. Strip it down no blockages
    but loses suction.

I use it in the shed & garden now.

The only thing that is wrong with my 10 year old dyson is the on/off switch - that is easily solved with a bit of sellotape! Never had a problem with the belt either.

Have you actually spoken to Dyson or an engineer?

As others in this thread I have had a Dyson Animal for 6 years. Never had a problem best Hoover I have ever had. They'll always be those with problems with any popular product

As for the OP it may be worth talking to trading standards

Thanks everyone for your thoughts and suggestions

gavjbrown- thats a good idea, i hadnt thought of trying paypal

I think we will try changing the belt and failing that will contact Dyson for a repair. I have dogs and cats so have tried other vaccum cleaners but Dyson are far superior for lift the hair.

    Cheers!

We have a DC07 animal, 7 years old. Recently the suction had become really poor. I emailed dyson to arrange a service (£69) to get it sorted out. They rang back and told me it was most likely that the filter needed cleaning, which we did and voila! Good as new. It had got clogged with plaster dust after some DIY. I can't fault them at all. Have you tried cleaning your filter? Especially if you're using it in shed/garden, it's bound to be filthy.

Whenever my dyson loses suction (which is quite a lot) and there are no blockages to be found I give the filter a wash and that seems to sort it out for a while.

Exactly no loss of suction is rubbish. It has filters so it will lose suction eventually unless they are cleaned or replaced.

I have no idea why mine does it, But for shed & garden work its fine.

Sucked up half a tub of paint dust a while back, I bet that clogged the filter. It does keep working though.

If the bottom roller isnt spinning, but the motor is, then its the belt.

That smell is the metal shaft from the motor spinning against the broken belt.

    To remove the belt -

Unplug the dyson, lay it on its belly and extend it out (like you would when using it), with a coin, screwdriver, a normal knife, open the 3x slotted catches on the bottom and pull away the bottom section. That will show you the roller and belt.

Remove the roller, remove old belt. Slide new belt over motor shaft, use a screwdriver / small bar and pull really hard on the belt, and have a friend slide the roller through the loop you have created. Put roller into place, re-secure plastic trim and slotted catches.

    Hey presto..

Or a nice Youtube video, though they are all the same.
