Thanks Dusty. I'm not sure what I'm planting yet... haven't actually picked the plants. There will be some roses, which I know like clay, but the soil is very difficult to work at the moment. I have no homemade compost at the moment, but have plenty of topsoil, sand and organic compost made from garden waste. And chicken poo pellets. There are some stones in the soil, but they're larger rather than smaller. I also have bark, which I think is what made the biggest difference previously - I spread it on top every year and then dug it in at the end of the season and put new stuff on. I think I should probably do something more, as it's difficult to plant things at the moment.Dustykitten wrote: »1. What are you planting? Does it mind clay
2. I find whatever I dig in helps but the stuff often disappears (Hex calls this hungry soil)
3. do you have stones in the soil to help with drainage - mine is clay in belts but stoney with it?
4. you could add sharp sand but I find this unsuccessful; fine gravel or even pea shingle if you need drainage.
5. compost always helps, leaf mould is good for improving texture without adding nutrients (not always wanted) as is the good old stuff you make yourself. Manure if you can get some from stables also really breaks the soil up but it needs to be aged.

Glad I'm not the only one who is tired out this week - wonder if the odd weather has anything to do with it? I laid on the sofa whilst chatting to DS who was constructing "things" on the floor, and then came too when a little voice said "I'm hungry can I have some tea?" - I had lost a couple of hours - oops!

Right, bathtime shortly, then prep tea (stealing Rach's menu), then some more find the floor games.
MoamAlthough no one can go back and make a brand new start, anyone can start from now and make a brand new ending.... life is a WIP.
