I think you will find the stat is at fault.

It may be that there is some tracking (caused by ingress of grease, spill from the hob or similar) across the terminals which is then causing the element to always stay on. If you take the switch off and find this to be the problem it will be a nice easy fix.

Stat seems favourite. Diplomat = MFI = Oops! Replacement might be a challenge! :)

First of all... Kill the power to the cooker.
You might have a switched spur near the oven or a direct feed from a breaker. Knock these off first before doing anything. If you have to kill all the power in the house to be sure it is off do this.

All will be slightly different, but this should give you an idea...

Normally... the switches will be on a panel which will be hooked in place at the top and there will be a couple of screws hidden out of sight in the frame of the oven door. Once you've taken these off, pull the panel towards you from the bottom and it will rotate on the top and lift off (normally).
Once off, you'll be able to see the rear of the switch. You'll have to assess the method of removing this yourself, be it clips, screws or witchcraft holding it in place.
At this point you can check for tracing and/or take any details from it you can to aid sourcing a new one.

I see you are in West Sussex, as am I... Where abouts? I may be able to point you in the direction of a good source for a new stat.

Hope this helps. I'm not great with explaining.
