Refund of non-refundable

I have booked a break at a hotel in Scotland in two months time. The deposit and balance were paid, and the paperwork says that these are non-refundable.
Over the last week or so, there have been numerous reviews of the hotel, all complaining of serious sickness caused by contaminated water. The hotel is aware of the problem and has been handing out bottled water to wash in as well as warning guests not to drink the tap-water.
Due to a medical condition, I simply dare not risk staying at such a place. Is the fact that they do not have safe water enough for me to cancel and claim my money back. If so, how do I go about it?
I emailed the hotel two days ago, stating my position, but they did not reply.

Why not just give the hotel a ring and actually speak to someone before asking advice on an internet forum?
Seems like everyone is afraid to talk to a real person these days and would rather use e-mail to complain or ask questions!0 -

I am liking you again! A good, common sense answer.
OP, if there was a serious risk to health the hotel would be forced to shut down. This implies to me that the problem is not as serious as it may seem.Gone ... or have I?0 -

Can you get a letter from your doctor stating this, it would put you in a much stronger position to prove they are not able to carry out their side of the contract.0 -
