Co-operative bank cashminder debit card

I have recently opened a cashminder account with the co-op. I have been sent a card which says 'visa debit'
I am unable to use the card with tesco online groceries, but they did allow me to use it with tesco direct (over the phone) orders.

I have read pages and pages on various websites which say that the electron card was being changed to a regular visa debit card (ie dropping the electron side of things). I phoned co op today who said the card is still an electron despite the card not saying that and that there were no plans to change this.

This means I cannot buy my shopping from tesco online as they do not accept electron.

I am somewhat confused by all this, seems odd that they accept it over the phone but not online (tesco)

Are you allowed more than one Cashminder account? That's handy to know. :)

    Ok thanks

I didn't realise it was possible to have more than one cashminder, handy really...one for DDs, bills etc.

Strange that. Have you tried using it for tesco direct purchases? I got error message regarding electron.

Does your visa debit card start wirh 4508?

Copied from another MSE poster 4508 is visa electron and always will be. Unless VISA reassign the BIN number to visa debit, which would affect other banks using the same prefix so i doubt they'll do that.

For example Halifax use 491754 for their visa electron and Abbey use 491731

if they changed 4917 to visa debit they'd both have to switch to the new card scheme.

4508 and 4844 are also generic visa electron prefixes used by many card issuers

so they basically need a new prefix if its to be a proper visa debit.

I presume so yes I cannot understand though why some are having trouble when they have the visa debit cashminder card and tesco and others don't seem to have any trouble very confusing:(

Yes I noticed that with my old basic halifax account I had a debit card starting 491754, and now with my cashminder my card starts 4508. Neither work(ed) with Tesco online.

So annoying that some customer's cashminder debit cards are taken and others are not, having no car, it means i have to shop with asda, who never fail to p*** me off...there is always some problem or another for me with their grocery delivery service.
  • Mine starts 4917 too although it's an older one which bears the "ELECTRON" symbol.

We have to use the credit card for Tesco groceries... that said, we do tend to use Asda Or Occado and have found them both to be excellent (coming from someone who used to develop the Tesco.com site and with no axe to grind!)

That was true last year, however, visa DID reassign 450875 to visa debit in September last year and it still doesn't work.

Here is an updated list of all the card BINs and their functions

    http://www.barclaycard.co.uk/business/documents/pdfs/bin_rules.pdf

    The problem is 2 fold.

(1)Some of the retailers arn't using the most up to date list and therefore as far as they are concerned its still electron.

(2)The Chip in the card is still being programmed as a visa electron. You can see this on your receipt it says AID 321010 (visa electron) and should say 31010(visa)

The cards have issue expiry of 2012 and i've heard that co-op won't have this fixed until next year.
