The door kind of snapped down the middle as they kicked it in so they sent someone out to nail two bits of board across it so he can get the door closed. He said he'll let me know what happens so hopefully he can pay extra in his rent or something.

Alternatively, you could try asking for damages from the fire brigade as surely they should have taken a bit more time and care rather than trying to get to the fire at all costs :whistle::whistle:.

I suspect u will find that they will say that with smoke coming out, they had to get in asap. If u had seen a demonstration of how quickly a fire spreads.., u wouldn't even be asking lolol.., its very very quick.

It does depend on the HA a bit, but normally they will agree to payment terms. Most social housing organisations nowadays do exclude things from the list of what they will pay for.., 30 years ago the story might have been different. But I'm afraid he will have to pay, even if its a few £'s per week. Its a little bit unfortunate because a solid door (which u will just not find in social housing properties because of the additional expense) would probably not have split down the middle, but I'm afraid it doesn't change anything, he will have to either get another door off something like Freegle (and u have to make offers first), find another way to get a second hand door (try recycling places.., second hand stores) and fit it himself if he has the skills to do it (not an easy job) or pay the HA costs.

He went out, left the cooker on - an accident. I'm sure he didn't intend all this to happen.
Contact the Fire Brigade and ask them for the report and you'll find it was logged as an INCIDENT. That's because there is no such thing as an accident in the eyes of the emergency services. There is ALWAYS someone or something to blame. ALWAYS.
The insurance companies may use the word accident but again, there's always something or someone responsible.

    Hi

Looking for advice on this, please.

This afternoon, my neighbours smoke alarm was going off for ages and since my partner has passed him on the street ten minutes ago, we knew he wasn't home. I went to his door and could smell smoke so we called the fire brigade who came out, looked through letterbox and could see smoke so they kicked the door in. He'd left something on the cooker so luckily there wasn't major damage so asked us who owned the property.

Like us, the whole block is owned by a housing association so I think the fire brigade were arranging to contact them to fix the door back up.

My neighbour came back during this so they told him he should contact the housing association to see to his door.

He contacted them and they told him that they would send someone to 'secure' the door but he would have to pay for a new one.

I don't understand how they can ask people to pay - especially as he was out and we called the fire brigade.

He said that the reason he had to pay was because he had left the cooker on and it was negligence. I've contacted the housing officer and expressed my disgust at this. Everybody here is on a low income and who can afford to pay for a new front door?

If people knew that their neighbour will be left with a bill for a new door, I think some people would think twice about reporting fires etc, this is really dangerous.

Anyone else been in this situation and what else can be done? Do they take peoples incomes into account or do most councils/housing associations just expect you to pay?

It's a front door we're talking about, I'm just apalled at this.

:rotfl::rotfl::rotfl::rotfl: Yes,I'm sure there will be people now not reporting fires and deciding to either let a house burn down or everything inside be destroyed, leaving the tenant with naff all, just so they don't have to pay for a door :rotfl::rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:

I think you need to take a step back and calm down over this! You seem quite angry with the HA and there is no reason to be.

    It's his fault.He should pay.

They'll likely add extra to his rent each week to pay it off

Is this a Housing Association tenant attitude????

If this had happened to my own house, I would be grateful that the fire was caught in time.

I appreciate he is on low income. He should be negotiating to have the housing association do the repair and for him to pay the costs in installments.

Both myself, my partner and my neighbour work, pay tax, pay rent and are not housed by the state, we rent from a Housing Association.

It seems that you live in a strange assumptive world where everyone renting from HA is on the dole, taking handouts and contributing nothing.

The reason for me asking on here is because I feel bad for my neighbour who has only recently moved, is struggling to make ends meet on a low wage and thought I'd ask to see if anyone has advice to help.
Perhaps an appropriate action on your part would be to organise a whip round amongst the neighbours.

I am afraid your initial post did rather contribute to the picture that people 'should' be insulated from the consequences of their mistakes. Perhaps if a whip round produces different results and you post the outcome, you may influence people to think differently.

Thankfully we don't all make unreasonable demands like the OP. Having been a Council/HA tenant all my life i already know without even reading the Tenancy agreement that i will be liable for any damage caused by my own negligence.

That's why i make sure i don't leave the cooker on when i go out. It's not about being 'perfect' as the OP keeps saying, it's about being responsible.

I think i might leave my oven on when i take the dog out just so i can call the HA to express my 'Disgust' when i burn the house down. LOL:rotfl::rotfl:
