i think it is OP's clear sense of outrage ""I've contacted the housing officer and expressed my disgust at this" that is making people angry - and that includes me...
due to his own stupidity this neighbour could have killed other people in the block - where YOU and your family live - and you want us to feel sorry for him ?????0 -

People are easily angered then.
Also quick to make personal assumptions about me and my neighbour (the Daily Mail brigade lol)
This site is dedicated to Money Saving. What I feared was gonna happen was that someone was gonna come out to his door, fit the door and demand payment without him having the cash, he didn't seem to be given a choice when he phoned up.
I phoned the fire brigade because I was a concerned neighbour. I asked on here because I wanted to see if I could get some advice for him. He went out, left the cooker on - an accident. I'm sure he didn't intend all this to happen.
If we were all as perfect as some of the contributers of this thread, we would no doubt live in a perfect world.£2 Savers Club 2014 #74 - £4840 -

Agreed. I don't even understand the 'Outrage' toward the HA anyway. I could understand it if it had been something they had been responsible for but why are they getting it in the neck for something they were not responsible for?
Perhaps OP could clarify what she feels gives her the justification to express disgust at the HA for something they do not have a moral or legal duty to take responsibility for, when she herself has also agreed in her own tenancy that they are not responsible for damage caused by negligence of a tenant?
Am i missing something?0 -

Fear I am repeating myself here, but here goes. The guy was told on the phone they were sending someone out and he had to pay. I felt this was unfair as they seemed to not care when he told them he didn't have the money. It wasn't made clear if this would be a private tradesman who would draw up a bill or if it would be a joiner from the HA (esp since it's Sunday).
Obviously when I asked I was looking for clarification on whether this kind of damage is covered by his rent or the payment process for this kind of thing.
Hope we all know our tenancy/mortgage/insurance terms inside out. Perhaps a large proportion of this forum would disappear if people read every single word of small print.
Must be hard work being perfect.

Both myself, my partner and my neighbour work, pay tax, pay rent and are not housed by the state, we rent from a Housing Association.
It seems that you live in a strange assumptive world where everyone renting from HA is on the dole, taking handouts and contributing nothing.
The reason for me asking on here is because I feel bad for my neighbour who has only recently moved, is struggling to make ends meet on a low wage and thought I'd ask to see if anyone has advice to help.
I would suggest that you are probably paying a below market rate for your property though.
The dependency comment was based on the fact that you were disgusted by the fact that your neighbour may have to pay for damage caused to the property which was his own fault.
A private tenant or homebuyer would never have even considered that someone else should pay, this I believe shows a totally different mindset between public and private sector tenants.
The fact that your neighbour is having problems making ends meet is not his landlords fault.0 -

Sorry dear, can you show me the post where i said i was perfect? lol
The reason you are not getting the replies you want is because your argument is completely flawed. You don't need to be 'perfect' to use a bit of common sense.
Why on earth would his 'rent' cover this kind of damage? Where are you getting these ideas from? :rotfl:0 -

Having been a rented privately for around 8 years, I wouldn't say the mindset if different but would say the repairs procedure and terms are different. Hence me asking.
Chill out a bit.£2 Savers Club 2014 #74 - £4840 -

This is surely a wind up?
This was NOT an accident (as that would have been unavoidable) - your neighbour was stupid enough to leave something on the cooker and then went out thus putting everyone else in the block at risk from fire - he's an IDIOT (or incapable of independant living).
How can you possibly think he shouldn't pay for his own mistake? Why should the HA pay for the new door - it wasn't them that left something on the stove which led to the smoke and then the follow up actions of the firemen.
Gawd, why are people so unable to take responsibility for their actions - it makes me so bloomin' mad .:hello:0
