Hi everyone!
I am new to this...you can usually find me on the comping board!
I am thinking of putting my name down for a local allotment....I live in Exeter Devon, I have just found out that they are £38 per year...! and all it has is water. I was just wondering how much your local allotments were charging per year. My daughter who lives in Southend, Essex has one..shes charged £12 per year, what a big difference. I just thought It would be interesting to know how the charges vary in different areas.

Hi Dogcat, I've got an allotment in Bedfordshire it only costs me £9 per year, we get water and the use of the skip for rubbish, however I think I would pay £38 for the pleasure of having an allotment :)
Good luck with getting yours x

£40+ in Newcastle, in fact an 'enterprising' garden centre is letting small plots (not even your average 'half plot' on a proper allotment) "from £5 per week".:eek::eek: You could buy a lot of cabbages in Tesco for £260.

Amazing that you can still get a plot for under a tenner per year when you consider my domestic water bill is over £40 per month.

If you don't have room to grow vegetables in your garden and you think you can save more than £38 a year by growing your own, then I suppose it's a reasonable deal. It's less than £1 a week, and in the height of the growing season you'll be able to save more than £1 a week, especially if you've got a big freezer for preserving your surplus for the rest of the year. It's obviously a better deal if you grow things that are expensive to buy like tomatoes, courgettes, runner beans, soft fruit, asparagus. If you fill your allotment with cheaper vegetables like potatoes then from a economic viewpoint you won't be saving so much money.

I live in solihull and my cost for my allotment is £42 per year for a full plot. We have water and rubbish included. I know there is a two year wait and they offer half or quarter plots only now.

I would take at £38. Friend has one of the ones you pay £5 per week inc shed and greenhouse good but very small plots.

Wow, £38 sounds really good to me. I had no idea how much allotments costed but that's less than I thought they would be! Although there must be a lot of variation in cost if some areas do them for as little as £9.

I might look into how much they cost in my area :)

On the South Coast, we are charged £2.21 per rod, per year (one rod is 30.25 square yards or 25.29sq metres and 5 rods is 126.46 sq metres), plus an additional 78p per rod, per year for water.

A 5 rod plot would cost about £15 a year.

Mine is larger than this so costs a little more.
:D Thanks to MSE, I am mortgage free!:D
