I use a Canon Pixma 5200 and I bought the last set of inks from "Moreinks", I think I had six cartridges for about £20, and the colours are fine.

I know people who have used SOS cartridge. You'll have to google them.

I have found refills to be unreliable.

If you are printing a lot consider a laserjet. A friend of mine was printing so much he was changing cartridges every week he now saves a fortune.

Yes, lasers more expensive, although have dropped considerably on price, but over time, and sometimes a short time much more economical.

Goes to show why you should sources your ink replacements before buying a printer, as the ink is the true cost of consumer printers. We've owned a lot of printers before I finally learned that lesson!

Timalay There are loads of Compatible Ink Suppliers around doing different prices some of the inks are good (I use INK-POWER on Ebay) not sure if they do your Cannon because i dont know the cartridge numbers but really good ink and they offer 100% money back guarantee but my point is do not just look for the cheapest but check out how much ink is in each cartridge.

Posters are missing the point, everyone is recommending their fave supplier, but I cannot see cheap compatibles for the OPs Pixma 480 on any of the sites.
    Move along, nothing to see.

I got rid of my Pixma MP 460 after the supplied carts finished coz the ink is so expensive, the compats I tried only lasted a short time (choice stationary), I did some research and bought a Brother multi function model, replacement carts are cheap,, but the thing is nearly useless as it wont load glossy photo paper.
I think if a manufacturer would produce a decent printer with cheap carts it would clean up in the printer market, cheap printers with very expensive ink is the only thing they know, having said that I notice that Kodak have just brought out a range of printers with reasonably priced ink carts

I'm still not getting why people blindly buy cartridges when there are much better options out there. I'll never buy another or refil one or struggle with crappy "compatibles" that refuse to work or print poor colour.
Also, depending on what printing you need to do..sometimes a laser printer is a good option. Samsung do one for under 50 quid now. That would save a lot of dosh on black ink even if just used for text and everyday stuff like letters.
The printer itself ..to most people it's the cheap end of the deal as previously mentioned...but sometimes you need one that does certain things (print discs in my case) which limits choice.
My next printer is going to be an A3 with a CISS ...couldn't run it without that and just relying on carts...costs would be horrible lol
