Yes, I understand the process. I don't understand why people would choose to do it that way. I've always bought the next place first and sold the last place afterwards. ;)

Because for some people the stress of moving twice in a short time is much worse.

If you have kids or pets it's best to avoid imo.

Not a lot of people are in such a fortunate position to be able to afford to do that though.

Yes but not everybody can afford to 'own' two houses at the same time.

    Hi,

We're the middle of a chain. FTB below, people moving into rented above.

We're only moving around the corner, and I'm debating whether to try and do it ourselves, or get movers to do it. I've done most of the packing, so the removals quotes we've had so far have been £480 inc and £500 exc.

Trouble is, I know you can only complete on a day solicitors are open, but OH works in a school, so there's no way he can get the day off to help with the move.

I always thought that you had to be packed and out by the time your keys get handed over - and that you only get your new keys at about the same time. Is this true?

What's people's experience like of this - is it totally unacceptable to ask our vendors if we can get stuff in early?

    Thanks

    S13

We did the same a few years ago. The new property was just around the corner and we were going from a 2 bed to a 3 bed. We didn't have massive furniture to move as the wardrobes in both properties were built in as were a couple of the appliances. So we thought we'd do it ourselves with a little help from family.....BIG MISTAKE!!

After the call from the solicitor to say the money had changed hands. We started to move our stuff to the new house. When we arrived the lady was still packing!!! We ended up having to load our stuff in to the garage as the FTB who bought our place were chomping at the bit to get into our old place.

It took us several trips to move ourselves and our buyers were decorating around us. Thank god they were so understanding! The vendor at our new place didn't finish removing her stuff until 5pm and by then we were knackered but had to start unpacking and putting up things like the bed.

Never ever again! Next time we move, we're hiring someone else to do it. For the sake of £500, just pay it and get the job done. It will be worth every penny!!

I helped a friend and his family move once. It was an absolute nightmare. Personally I'd always get a removal company in.
It's my problem, it's my problem
If I feel the need to hide
And it's my problem if I have no friends
And feel I want to die

Also are you sure your OH can't get a day off to help with moving? Many councils give a day paid every year if moving house, even if a teacher.

Oh aye. Sorry I'd read it the wrong way... as you'd guessed.
But most people don't have the money to do it that way!

We moved ourselves. We were hiring a big van with a lift. It was only a couple of streets away. The night before moving day my husband went to pick up the van from the rental place and they'd double booked the big one and it was gone! You can imagine the panic we were in. We only got a small one, with no tail lift. We managed to borrow a Transit and a pick-up. First thing in the morning I asked our solicitors if we could have the key to the garage of the new house. He got in contact with the sellers and they agreed, so first thing we moved what we could into the garage of our new house while my husband and son went back and forth re-loading the vans.

Our new house was already empty - the previous owner had died. I'm not sure how feasible it would've been though if the owners had been moving out on the same day too.

We had loads of helpers so it wasn't too bad.
