Hi there, we are driving from Scotland to Skegness with 2 kids, aged 3 and 5, we have scheduled stops every 2 hours, but what can we give the kids to keep them entertained during the journey, we have an incar dvd player so going to take that but what else does anyone have any ideas?
Please also note we do not allow eating/drinking or crayons/pens/pencils etc in the car.
Thank you in advance

I found making up a 'special treat' box works with mine. Every so often when they are getting fed up I'll get something new out of the box - it might be a magazine, some sweets, a new book, puzzles etc. I pick things up cheap from the works etc.
Hope you have a good trip.0 -
Games like eye spy (using colours, numbers, letter sounds) are educational and fun for that age group I have found, plus you can get a singalong cd for the car of nursery rhymes, letter sounds, times tables, stories. Comics and picture books if your child does not suffer from car sickness are also good.
I know you said you do not allow eating and drinking in the car, but I would reconsider the drinking bit and have water on a long journey, as 2 hours without a drink in a hot car or even an air conditioned car can be dehydrating and lead to head aches, feeling sick etc. You can always limit it, so you are not doing more stops than planned for the toilet. You can get bottles with sports tops so no spills.0 -
a DS for the 5yr old with a pokemon game will keep him/her happy, as for the 2 yr old, they'll probably fall asleep0

Libraries have a host of audio books for all ages, get some that your children like and play them on the journey.0

Totally agree with Susan about the drinks. We recently travelled from Cheshire to Somerset and our children would have really struggled with the heat if we did not allow drinks. Sing a long CD's are a great idea too as are the story CD's. What about giving your eldest a map and pointing out where you are on your journey. A print out with your route highlighted would be good. My son enjoys looking at maps to see where we are going.0

That's not a long car journey. We're travelling Kent to north of Fort William this summer!:p:D
We have an in car DVD player, seat back trays armed with pens, pencils, puzzle and activity pads, DS's etc etc. Some of the stuff will get dropped in the footwell and it's a 2 minute job to tidy up and put everything back into place.
I guess the 3 year old may fall asleep for part of the journey. We also have an iPod with all their favourite music on for a singing session. This allows them to vary between drawing, watching a DVD or listening to music.
Do you have room in the car to carry fold up scooters to give them a run around when you stop? The man without a signature.0 -

Car bingo is also good, make your own bingo squares including red cars, blue cars, sheep, travel signs etc, and first to cross them all off wins a prize.
Kids get tired when travelling so make sure they are comfortable when they nod off with pillows and maybe a comfort blanket. The longer they sleep the better for you, especially if they are comfy.
Also, let them have drinks. I'm sure at their ages they can work sports type bottles and just put water in them, so if there is a spillage, it's only a bit of water.
If it was me ... I'd get the train. No way could I be bothered to drive that trip ... and back!!!!!!!!!
Have fun!0 -
Do you plan to do that in one day? I ask because I have always fancied Scotland and I live in Kent. Everybody I know who travels from here stops off for a night en-route.vikingaero wrote: »That's not a long car journey. We're travelling Kent to north of Fort William this summer!:p:D
