DS is useful as is DVD, if u don'tlike poss mess of pencils and crayons, invest in an etch a sketch or magnetic sketch pad, home and bagain did have cheap ones, as did B and M or else early learning / argos etc, drinks in sipper cups are no probs, tomee tipee ones are great and rarely spill and few probs.. esp if only water, many games can be played during journey, or better still travel when the kids are sleeping!!!! better for them, and better for you as usually less traffic!!! but have fun! or you can stop off on way down at the many fruit picking farms, and have a leg stretch adn a snack at the same time!!!!!

just came across this post as i live in glasgow my wife and i did fort william last week when we had some amazing weather up here if i was you, i would leave really early in the morning ie 3am and travel up but as someone has said once you get to scotland the traffic just seems to disappear. i would try to get up to rannoch moor and glencoe (still got snow) in daylight as i travelled back on our last trip i stopped in a laybe on the moor and i was the only person for miles and you could always let the kids out for 1/2 hour to run about lol. safe journey you will love it

Well if people will post on open forums saying no drinks in the car for their kids, what do they expect? We have a no messy food rule, but pencils and crayons would be allowed, as would crisps - they just hoover up, fgs!

OP won't see this as they have left now...which is a pity, I was going to suggest not taking the DVD player:p... it concentrates the eyes in one area instead of looking at the horizon scanning for things for car bingo... we all know what happens when you don't look out the window.

But since OP knows best and it's their car...;)

You will need a paper and pencil for this to keep track of the score, its probably best if one person scores and everyone else plays (to avoid arguments). Starting with the player behind the driver the game starts after the first silver car. The player has to pot balls in order until the next silver car which ends his or her go. The winner is the person with the most points after the black has been potted at the end of the whole sequence (see a black car) after 'potting' all the other colours in order. (pink balls are a car with a caravan, brown balls are a white van)
The order of colours is: red 1 point, followed by any of the colours below (do this 15 times). yellow 2 points, green 3 points, brown 4 points, blue 5 points, pink 6 points, black 7 points. Hold on I haven't finished yet! if you see two red cars behind each other, when you are doing the first bit of red followed by colour, you loose 4 points and your go!

We've done a few long journeys (4 hours is long for me!) & I find that the kids are happier when they do eat. Obiously don't let them gorge on !!!! but a small sandwich, some fruit, sips of drink - keep their blood sugar up. Worst you can do is give them a book to read!

They sing, they play eye spy, they count those blasted caravans ;) & they count the junctions on the M6 till we get to J40 at Penrigh when we turn for Centre parcs! The 1st to see it gets a small prize.

The OP could send the kids down the mines or up some chimneys then she and hubby could enjoy their trip in a nice clean car.

We made what should have been a 5 hr trip on 28th May and turned out to be 8 1/2 hrs due to traffic. It was my DS birthday as well! He was as good as gold as he was playing on his present - a second hand nintendo DS for most of the way and then fell asleep. Now the initial buzz of having one has worn off I limit his time on the nintendo. Peaceful easy trip!

Now the trip back with his brother and him for 4 hrs was a nightmare - "I want to see," for about 4 hrs straight. AAGGGGHHHH Little one will just have to wait until his birthday in November.
Me, OH, grown DS, (other DS left home) and Mum (coming up 80!). Considering foster parenting. Hints and tips on saving £ always well received. Xx

March 1st week £80 includes a new dog bed though £63 was food etc for the week.
