constant water hammer

a few weeks ago i replaced my bathroom suit which included all new pipe work and the radiator being replaced for a towel radiator with new valves. this may be unrelated, but the last few days ive been getting all most constant water hammer through out the day and night (im assuming it to be water hammer, banging pipes sound). this is happening even when the heating is off and no taps are running or the washing machine running? any ideas as to what could be causing this and possible solutions

The only time I have had water hammer the cause was the valve in the cold storage tank in the loft.

As the valve closed it set off a vibration, which made the float bounce and that opened and closed the valve causing the hammer noise.

I fitted a new and better valve (less than £10) and that cured the problem.

Another cause of noise is expansion and contraction in poorly installed pipe work sticking against wooden joists but I wouldn’t call that water hammer.

There are lots of other possible causes of noise in water systems.

    Good luck.

You need to ask your self what have you changed or adjusted. Then work from there.

  • thanks for the replys. ive got a closed system combi, so no storage tank to worry about. stopcock is fully open i think (very stiff). the only thing ive changed that could affect the preesure is the valves on the radiator. ill try these in various positions and see if that makes a difference.

As you say it is doing it all the time, regardless of whether the heating is on or not, I wouldn't think the towel rail valves will not have anything to do with it.

When saying, 'it does it all the time' what precisely do you mean by that.

When you run a hot tap? When you flush a toilet? When you run a cold tap?

Have you left any dead legs full of air at the end of any pipe work changes?
  • what i mean by all the time is a couple of times an hour every hour regardless of weather or not any water appliances are on or not (eg. taps, washing machine, heating). sorry, i dont understand the dead legs bit? what are they and do i need them?
  • Do you live in a flat?
  • i live in a 3 bed end terace
  • I had this problem in my house and the simple solution was to turn the stopcock down from fully open to about half open.

Some valves can give constant hammer if they are the wrong way round, but only when the heating is pumping water around the sytem.
