Is it ok to turn my Sky+HD box off at the socket

... each night? I have just been upgraded and I used to unplug the old Grundig box off every night without any problem (and it lasted 15 years:p) The installer said if I did , it would take 15mins to turn on and I would have to go through a new box installation each time! Is that true - the old box just searched for channels and then came on - a couple of mins max. I hate leaving things on standby, so please can someone advise me?

2-3 minutes from switching back on, that's all.

You will get used to doing this anyway.....

Thanks Withabix. I will switch it off tonight with a carefree mind!!

Just a thought - will I have to do anything after I turn it on? If so are the instructions on the screen and more importantly, easy to follow?

shouldnt be a problem but remember anything you have set to record in the middle of the night wont record, think this goes for if you switch the tv off at the wall but leave your sky+ box on too

you can turn tv off and it will still record so long as sky box is plugged in

Surely it will miss any software updates, they are usually broadcast through the night ?

No,most updates are done during the night & if the box is turned off,the box will miss these & take longer to boot up.Also as the is power running to the LNB,to turn the power on & off regularly could burn out the transponder either in the box or LNB not to mention the is the danger of the smart card loosing it's regionality, therefore a rescan is needed on boot up.(Happened to my old Sky+ box I was useing as multiroom)
Also if it's a condition that you have to keep the box connected to the phone for the first year, the box will/may miss the callbacks to Sky,not so important with a single box install but crucial with multiroom,if Sky fail to get the monthly callback, you'll be charged full price for the multiroom subscription
The power the HD boxes use on standby is negligable compared to the older boxes & the's a built in auto off feature which turns the box off after a certain time with inactivity.
I'm not only basing this on personal experience but also on what I was told & experienced on service calls when working as a Sky Engineer as well as a Service Engineer for NTL/VM,even tho VM's boxes are different they both work roughly the same way as Sky,s so the same applies to both.
