A good deal, or should I be expecting more?

OK, I have just put a deposit on an 09 (May 2009) plate i30 Comfort (the middle range version) with 3500 miles on the clock in a beautiful metallic black. The clincher was the iPod dock...
The price on the screen was £8995 and I got it for £8000. No part exchange done so I can now sell my Ka privately. If I get £500 for it that's an added extra and will pay for two years insurance, if I don't sell it, perhaps I'll insure it for my 18 year old and he can learn to drive in it.
I'm pleased with the deal.
Thanks for all the tips.
Good news,
Now your halfway through the deal, the next step is collecting the car, and inspecting it very hard for any damage / defects.
I would prob spend about an hour going around the car checking that everything works (windows, doors, central locking etc) and having a good look in the engine bay, underneath etc.
Pretty much the dealer will have the car serviced (oil & filter change), a quick clean and polish and kick it out to you. So any faults it had when it came in will still be there.

Hi Alias,
I know nothing much about what goes on under he bonnet of a car, but I know a man who does (my dad). The first thing he did was feel the disc brakes to see if the mileage looked realistic (it did).
I took it for a test drive. Luckily, the dealer was right next to a busy A road so I was able to open it up. No puts, spurts or farts. All the instruments were alight, no red/amber or flashing lights. A idiot pulled out of a lay by right in front of me so I know the brakes and the horn work!
As the car is only a year old, there is 4 years remaining on the 5 year Hyundai warranty. One of the first things I'll do is take it to be serviced at the local Hyundai garage as I doubt the previous owner did.
They also offered me a print out of the HPI check.
Anything else I should be looking for/asking?"If you think it's expensive to hire a professional to do the job, wait until you hire an amateur." -- Red Adair0 -
Hello
I would advise that you ask to see the service book and V5 document if you havent already.
In my case I have bought a 58 plate and was told the car had full service history only to find it had its first service late and that may invalidate any warranty. Hyundai may add an extra allowance (in my case 30 days or 1000 miles whichever comes sooner - but my car is outside of that - I have written to main dealer)
V5 or HPI verification re outstanding finance, written off, confirmation of number of owners (I have been caught out in the past before, told 1 previous only to find 2 when i received document from DVLA)
I used a checklist from here http://www.buyacar.co.uk/buy_a_car_help/buying_a_used_car/article_used_car_buyers_checklist_2942.jhtml
and http://www.whatcar.com/images/subscription/BuyingUsed.pdf
Also added in my own things picked up from other forums etc
Boot light in place and working? (as they usually remove this when car on display and boot open)
Spare key? And can it start the car?
Take a CD for player and also check radio, and also your ipod to check
Seats move forward (and back lol)
Alloy wheel nut
Spare tyre and jack etc or car kit
Manual (Seems silly but check its the one for your car! They gave me one for a different model)
Service book with correct stamps and VIN number
Open the bonnet to see where things go especially the screen wash etc
All windows open
Air conditioning working and heater working
If you have parking sensors check they work
Interior and exterior lights working0 -
Loads of things I hadn't thought of.
I will be calling Hyundai tomorrow to ask about the warranty. In my case, the car was first registered on May 31 2009 so I'm only a week out of the first year."If you think it's expensive to hire a professional to do the job, wait until you hire an amateur." -- Red Adair0 -
Hi!
Yes things should be fine for you, they should allow a period of grace. Mine was out by 2 months0 -
I'm almost looking forward to taking my car to the local Hyundai main dealers to be serviced. It's the place where the salesman tried to sell me an i20.
He called today while I was out buying my i30."If you think it's expensive to hire a professional to do the job, wait until you hire an amateur." -- Red Adair0 -
Lol great stuff! I'm really pleased that you got the car you want and for the same price! And still can sell your car too0

There are several forums for the i30, good for comparing notes and maybe faults on.
Get yourself good car mats so as not to wear a hole in the carpet.
Try using the 'TA' function for a day, does the Radio/MP3 player behave itself with TA switched one? This is a known issue but few confirmations of a proper fix out there.
I assume you have the owners manual? Hard to lay hands on otherwise.
The main question I would ask is: Why would anyone want to sell theirs after a year?0 -
OK a bit of an update. I collected the car on Thursday. I called Hyundai and booked a service for June 22 and checked that this would be OK with the warranty and was told yes.
I now know more about the history of the car as the salesman at Hyundai remembers the guy who bought it and my sister is currently upgrading her Tuscon to a Santa Fe (so is in a position to ask the dealer).
It was a pre reg (something to do with the dealer meeting his sales figures) on May 31 2009 and sat on the forecourt until November 7th 2009 when it was purchased. The guy who bought it didn't like it and wanted to change it for something faster but didn't like any other Hyundai.
I don't mind, his loss = my gain.
I'm happy with it and still think I got a bargain.
Also sold my Ka to the first person who viewed it for £600."If you think it's expensive to hire a professional to do the job, wait until you hire an amateur." -- Red Adair0
