A good deal, or should I be expecting more?

I went to my local Hyundai dealer today wanting to look at a used i30. They didn't have any on site and the salesman told me to try an i20.
I was initially resistant because I'm trading up from a Ka (albeit an old one) and apart from the four doors, it didn't seem to be much of a trade up. My Ka is a 1.3 and the i20 is a 1.2 but the salesman told me that modern engines were better and I would find it nippier than my Ka.

Anyway, the one I test drove was a 59 plate with 33 miles on the clock but it was silver (which isn't really what I wanted) but I asked him for some figures.

The price on the windscreen was £9995 and I have a T reg Ka (50000 miles) to trade in.

He gave me a price of £8000 including the trade in. I wavered and at this point he said that if I wanted to pay the £365 extra for metallic paint, he could get me a 10 plate i20 with my favourite dark grey metallic colour.

The list price for the i20 new is £10,160.

Now I nearly went for it but said I wanted to think about it and having applied my brain (instead of my heart) it doesn't seem like much of a deal, but it is 11 years since I last bought a car so perhaps I'm wrong.

What do you all think?

I really want an i30 and am prepared to have one up to two years old to get what I want at a price I can afford. Is this a good idea?

    Hi There

Not that i'm a car expert, but i'd say keep looking and do your research. Have you looked online to compare prices for the i20 and i30?

Also i'd say did you get a separate price for your part exchange for the Ka?

I have recently bought a used car, and salesman like to lump everything in together to try and make it look like a good deal although £8k sounds good, but how much is your car worth?

I would say if you really want a i30 then look around some more. The new i20 will always be there to buy

I've just found an i30 just down the road (not a Hyundai dealer) 09 plate, 1.4, 1200 miles in black for £8995.

I think the trade in price for my Ka is £1200.

Going to have a look at it tomorrow.

    Thats good.

Not sure how you feel about buying from places other than dealers? I prefer dealers for peace of mind, which is also translated to added stress and hassle as the dealers I have dealt with have trouble with the truth lol

Anyway if you find the car and same spec (like for like) maybe you could go back to the dealer and use as bargaining tool? That way you get the car you want and ease of going back to dealer if any problems (hopefully not)

Just a suggestion, it might work lol

It is a car dealer, just not a main agent. I've been reading up on negotiating tactics here..

Soz I mean main dealers and not other car dealers.
  • Your KA is worth nothing as a trade in. Anything over £500 is a good deal for it and you will find the dealers will use it as a negotiating tool so that they arent discounting the new car as such.

Overall thats a good price for a car that is being ordered in; you could maybe achieve more elsewhere yes but if they are offering the car you want at a price you want then maybe you should go for it.

A look online suggests your price is pretty good therefore you may well find you need to do a lot of work to better it and wont better it by much.

Now scrappage is over I30's arent as desirable and if thats what you want I would go for one of them. Most dealers seem to have little more than £500 between the pre reg I20's and I30's

Whilst you do need to negotiate ensure that you dont take the mick as once dealers lose sight of the sale the likely discounts etc dissapear as they wont want to waste time on a tyre kicker.
You will have more negotiating power if you choose a car on site and not a particular colour etc.

OK, I have just put a deposit on an 09 (May 2009) plate i30 Comfort (the middle range version) with 3500 miles on the clock in a beautiful metallic black. The clincher was the iPod dock...

The price on the screen was £8995 and I got it for £8000. No part exchange done so I can now sell my Ka privately. If I get £500 for it that's an added extra and will pay for two years insurance, if I don't sell it, perhaps I'll insure it for my 18 year old and he can learn to drive in it.

    I'm pleased with the deal.

Thanks for all the tips. :)
