download and run the software from your phone maker's site, plug phone into PC and press the button to backup your contacts.

Same with the new phone, except the button will be "restore contacts" or whatever.

Couldn't find a SIM card reader anywhere. I've bitten the bullet and typed them all into an Excel spreadsheet. Just got the problem of then keying them all into the new phone. Doing a master rest on my current phone will clear everything from there ..... won't it?

Why type them out in an execl doc, you could have got it done in about 5 minutes by following advice posted by kwikbreaks and bollotom

I tried the copy to phone and back again method and it didn't work for whatever reason.
I couldn't find a SIM card reader in any of my local pound shops either.
At least in an Excel doc, they're reasonably well backed-up, even if it is hassle typing them all in.

Any posts are my opinion and only that. Please read at your own risk.

You can synchronise your contacts with your mail client contact. Like if you have yahoo mail, it reasonable to synchronise your mobile contact like with yahoo contact. This will be very useful, it serve as a backup and in the event of phone lost, you don't have to worry about lost of your contacts.
