orange limited service message?

My son uses an orange contract phone which is approx 6 months old. Got a call yesterday from orange asking whether he would like to upgrade but we said no as he was happy with both his package and his phone.

Within a couple of hours of that call, and whether a co incidence or not, his phone stopped receiving calls or being able to make calls. I called him and got a number not recognised message as did other people we got to phone. He is also unable to make any calls and the phone is showing 'limited service'.

I've tried logging in to orange to check whether there are technical problems, but can see nothing. I have been phoning customer services since last night, but having been put on hold they just cut you off after 7 or 8 minutes. I've now emailed them twice but can't imagine I will get a response any time soon.

My question therefore is, is anyone else on Orange and having connection problems? If not, has anyone any idea what 'limited service' actually means..is it that the phone is limited somehow or that the system itself it overloaded? When you call the number all you get is a message saying the number is not recognised and to redial taking care to dial the correct number.

I get that message when I'm in an area of poor signal quality however the areas that affect me on Orange are the same that I have also had problems with Vodafone and EasyMobile too.

How does he know it was Orange? Did he give any details to them like confirming date of birth, address and name.

I had the 'Limited service' message when I was out in the country. I presume that it was meaning that I could only make emergency calls.

Does it show this message wherever it is? Do you have another Orange mobile that you can put next to it to prove that it is not the signal/location you are in?

I had no service from 7pm last night until this morning, had too keep switching the phone on and off for it to regsiter to the network. Think it's a problem with Orange, but seems ok today. Could explain why you've had so many problems getting through to them - everyone else was complaining!!

Thank you all for your suggestions. I was actually quite impressed as Orange called me in response to my email. They suggested i did as Shaambles recommended and turn the phone off and then back on again, and the problems appears to have cleared.

The lady from Orange said they sometimes have network problems and basically the phone just needs to be reset by switiching it off and on.

As for how did I know that the original call was from Orange, it felt genuine and I did consider it was one of those rogue telecom companies. However she asked for me by name when my son originally answered the phone, she knew when I had taken out the contract and my call time package and didn't ask me for any info, just offered me the chance to upgrade and have an additional 120 texts a month free if I extended my current contract by another 6 months. I didn't take the upgrade though as I explained my son was young and liked a new model phone every year, so wouldn't want to extend the contract and miss that.
