You mean a whole new pipe all the way along the wall? That can be done relatively easily. Just replace all along the wall.

    Still no excavation required though.

Things are never that easy im afraid, they must go back to the main or back to where they find pe, i will be honest with you they will deff have to excavate. They cant connect back onto the old steel , not trying to be awkward with you just telling you what to expect to save any unwanted aggro when you deal with national grid.

Don't worry. I'd rather know what i am up against. Part of the frustration with NG is their unwillingness to even come and look until I pre-pay the whole cost.

Would I be able to shorten the pipe leading from the mains pipe to the meter? If I could get this meter a little higher, then it could stay where it is. Not great (it will then be in a bedroom) but might be worth the saving.

You could get the meter refixed on the wall to the left (in the pic)and connect it up to the main tap but its difficult to see the type of main tap you have as the tap may need changing.

I would try and get a national grid engineer there to refix the meter for you , there are ways you can get them to do this although i cant tell you but your plumber will be able to sort im sure :)

Hmm - none of that is good news - but thank you for your advice! At least I know my choices a bit better. Thanks!

just a sugestion why dont you trawl the streets untill you find a man with a digger working for the gas board .He will have the right tickets and a EUSR card £50 for the use of his membership number on the Form job done.
    good luck
Thats intelligent advice. What is he going to do when National Grid cross reference the number, find out he's supposed to be working for them on Job X and he loses his employment with them for moonlighting?

    Cheers
