On second thoughts, perhaps it's easiest to paint just the base. It takes less than 5 minutes to remove the base and won't take much longer to remove all the remaining parts, down to an isolated metal base shell. The circuit board needs some new components, too. I'll report how I tackle the electronics on another thread.

  • I decided to remove all the original paint from the Kenwood Chef by using paint stripper. Here's that task in progress:

  • How did you get on with this project?

    Any more photos ?

There's a company that restores them so there's obviously some sort of paint that's suitable. (Google "kenwood chef restoration")

I wonder if you could use appliance paint (the stuff B&Q sell for fridges etc) or car paint. I'd love to paint mine, it was sitting near a window for a while and the sun has turned one corner yellow.

Thats where my kenwood currently is! I'm sure to get it back soon - I can't wait! I'm having mine black and silver :D

Oh you have to post a photo when you get it back!

If one day I inherit my mum's 1970s chef, it might get a similar treatment :)

I saw a black with silver trim Chef on Ebay yesterday; it looked nice:D
The seller said it was a KM400, which is the same model as I have, but I thought that model only came in white plastic, or gray/silver metal body. It's possible that they do make them in black/silver, but I've never seen one before, so I did wonder if it had been re-painted at some point. It looked quite trendy, either way, though:D

Mine has a metal body and I did think about painting it pillar-box red a few months ago, but as I'm no good with taking things apart and putting them back together again, the only way that I could do it was to try very carefully to paint it using a brush. I wasn't really confident enough in case I made a pig's ear of it, so I decided it's probably best left alone.

The post you're referring to is over 7 years old (June 2010).
There is a suggestion to Google in that post so that may be a quicker option then waiting for a reply - especially as that poster hasn't logged on since January 2016.

Probably around the time this thread was started, my wife bought an early Kenwood Chef restored by a chap on the south coast. Overall he did a good job.

He later contacted her asking for feedback on the restoration. However, he was unaware that feedback is a large part of what my wife and I do for a living. He got the good and the bad along with suggestions on how to improve the quality of his product. One of those was paint. Unfortunately, he got quite upset about it.

I can probably dig out his details if you are interested.
