Short term TV licence (not aged 74!)

We own a TV set, but don't have it connected to an aerial (or even in the same room as one), and we don't have a TV licence. I've informed TV licencing of the situation and we're all good.
But now I find that I want to watch the world cup at home, but don't really want to spend close to £150 to do so. Is there any way to get a short term licence? I have read that students etc can have unused quarters refunded but what if the reason is simply "we're not using our TV to receive TV any more". As above, other than during the world cup we would keep it in a completely separate room.
Has anyone ever had a short-term licence? How did it work? What reason did you give them for cancelling it?

You would have to buy the licence and then if go back to your previous state of no longer needing it, you apply for a refund.

EDIT - not watching TV as it is broadcast is a perfectly valid reason.0 -
You could watch it on your computer and if you can display your computer screen on your tv then you are ok.
Go to this site and click on live sports and then on World Cup and you will see all the games being played each day. Click the tv screen icon on the right hand side to view. There is a forum and help page there if you get stuck

The cheapest and easiest way for you to do this is as follows
call TVL set up a licence to pay quarterly dd, make the first payment which is around £37 then cancel your direct debit with your bank your licence will cover you for june, july and august. you will get a reminder in august to say your licence is due to expire at which point ring them just to say you dont want to use the tv anymore and that will be the end of it, you may still get the general letters from them but you can just ignore them
HTH used to work at TVL (please dont all start shouting at me which is what usually happens when i try to help with these sorts of queries)***** on the road to debt freedom *****

Thanks everyone! In the end we've decided to go to the pub and mates houses and watch it all but will bear this advice in mind for the Olympics in 2012!
Scotsbob - sadly you need a licence to watch it live online
