How would you spend it?

This is a bit of fun, with absolutely no purpose, but my boyfriend and I were day dreaming about what we'd do if we won the lottery (even though we don't actually buy a ticket!) - so my question is this... if you won £10 million, how would you spend/save/administer it? Here's mine:£500,000 towards paying off debts and mortgages of me, my b/f and our parents.£1 million towards a lovely house for me and b/f in London.£1 million towards my business, to give it a boost and get it flying high.£1 million gifted jointly to my mum and dad for being lovely.£1 million in trust to pay education/uni costs for my children.£100,000 for me and b/f to spend any damn way we liked! (probably on a world tour or similar). The rest invested in high interest accounts and investments. Interest accrued would go towards living expenses, with a percentage going towards a charity each month in perpetuity (I'd also will any remaining balance on my death to start a scholarship fund to provide educational opportunities for disadvantaged young people.)It's quite hard to think how I'd apportion that much money - that's why more than half of it ends up in the blanket term of 'investments'. What would you all do? Save? Spend? Squander?

10 million.... hmmmm - naughty mirtos, you have me tempted to buy a ticket now

    It would be
    * pay off my debt ( of course)
    * buy a Zone 1 pad preferably round Farringdon/Spitalfields
    * get married give my parents & OH a million ( between them)
    * buy OHs sister a house
    * spend as much as is needed on Private health care to get better & same for OHs dad.
    * give quite a lot to wateraid and a few smaller choice london charities Ive worked with who struggle a bit ( 1 million between them all)
    * travel the world and become a coinniosseur of world music
    * buy a small flat in the Glastonbury area so that we get tickets for Glastonbury for life and let the place out to a caretaker for free
    * have loads of babies
*buy the piece of land i have my eye on
*share my winnings with other DFWs
*squander the change on haircuts, dvds, waitrose food, cabs and all the other things that im not allowed on the "money diet"

Can you tell Ive given this some thought ?
 Well aint funny how its the little things in life that mean the most? Not where you live, the car you drive or the price tag on your clothes.
Theres no dollar sign on piece of mind
    This Ive come to know...
So if you agree have a drink with me, raise your glasses for a toast
  • Hi Mirtos,

Here's how OH and I would split it

£500000 each to of our siblings (6 of)
    £1 million to my parents
£100000 to pay off mortgage and debts (would then sell house)
£1 million to buy a house and land in Cornwall, see below.
£500000 to buy a house on one of the Greek Islands
£500000 to set up a top of the range boarding kennels. I would also board greyhounds/lurchers that need rehoming for free, paid for from profits from kennels. :A
£100000 on dream cars (me) motorbikes (OH)

I would also find out how much it costs Riding for the Disabled to buy, train and keep a horse for it's entire career, and donate this amount to them. :A

I would also donate enough money to Kirsty's Appeal to enable it to reach it's target. (The little girl with Becks at Manchester's Commonwealth Games). :A

Anything left would be wisely invested so that we could live off the interest.

Honestly, I think £10m is to much for one person to win.

    Heres what I would do:
    £5m split between 3 charities
    £500,000 to my parents
    £500,000 to MIL
£250,000 to my brother & Wife (he doesnt deserve more lol)
£500,000 to BIL, wife & baby
£350,000 to buy a nice house & car
£110,000 to pay off my mortgage & gift house to mum (she loves my house)
    £12,000 to pay off debts.
    £500,000 savings scheme for Daughter
    £500,000 savings scheme for son
£100,000 into a current account for treats, holidays etc
    the rest would be invested

  • Unbelievably, I'm finding it difficult to think of enough things to do that would cost £10 million- I'm pretty sure I could do as much a sI'd ever want to with one million with all the MSE ways I've adopted! Now there's a question- if you had ten million at your disposal which MSE ways would you carry on with?!

After some thought the following would probably be on the list:
-Pay back my parents the money they gave me to help me out of a mess at uni, even though they said I didn't have to (plus extra)
    - pay off my other debts
    - give my sister the deposit for the house she wants
    - go travelling around South America for at least a year then stop off in Cuba and learn to Salsa
_ Learn to drive and buy a car (nothing fancy, just reliable)
    - Buy a pub, or small hotel with accomadation we could live in, in a nice little British seaside town and set it up with my OH as a small business specialising in organic food and beer. We'd employ enough people to eventually be able to only work half the week so that we could spend time together, and I could spend time writing The Great British Novel.
    - Take my friend Donna to New Orleans like we've been saying we would for years!
    - Run out of ideas now- I'd give the leftover money to Oxfam.

Does anyone else know the Patti Smith song "Free Money"? Kind of about fantasisisng what you'd do if you won the lottery- just reminded me of that!
