Netto / Asda

I guess my food bill is about to go through the roof!!!

I like to shop for the basics, cook my own food right from scratch, eating good food as cheaply as possible!

Most of my shopping was done in Netto, they have some really good deals on the basic stuff like meat (not fish), milk, cheese, breakfast cerials (crunchy nut = 80p cheaper than Tesco), etc etc etc.

With Netto now becoming Asda, my days of filling a shopping trolley for £40 are well and truly coming to and end!
It may sound daft, but I used to laugh at supermarket snobs who walk out of Tesco, Morrisons, Sainsbury's etc £100 poorer.... But now what choice do I have? I estimate paying atleast 50% more for my monthly shopping.
I'll be forced into buying "finest" this and "finest" that, or end up with utter rubbish and with fuel prices constantly rising im starting to get really worried :(

Anyone else going to be affected?

I shop at asda each week but get my fruit and veg from the local farm shop as it is a lot cheaper I don't buy there finest meat but I dont buy the cheapest one I usually go for the one in middle IYSWIM and it tastes nice and have had no problems there cheapest own brand chicken fillets are fine for currys and casserole.

You dont need to spend a fortune in Asda I dont as cant afford to goodluck.

    Hi There

Do you have an Aldi or Lidl near you? both can be good for fruit and veg as well as basics.

People on here also find markets good - although my local one is expensive.

It may be worth looking at buying sacks of potatos etc from a farm shop if you have one. Now is not really the best time to buy.

But we buy sacks of onions, swede and potato in the autumn - and most will last months if you store them somewhere cool and dry.

Apart from that - what about growing your own? we grow carrotts in trough planters, and if you have space for a growbag - you can grow tomato, lettuces and spinach, you can even put runner beans in a pot.

I also go blackberry picking - worth a go at the end of the summer.

For basics - also do you have a B&M or Homebargains near you - great for tinned and dry stuff.

Best Wishes - pm if any of this doesnt make sense ( its a bit of a jumbled post sorry!:o

Why would you be forced to buy their most expensive ranges???

I spend circa £40-£50 a week on my shopping at Sainsbury's, mostly my buying their basics range. TBH I never understood the fuss about Aldi and the like - very little range of goods, their tinned stuff had more salt and sugar in them than the basics equivalent at Mr S etc.
Granted I do bulk buy my meat from Costco but if I wasn't in this position I'd rather buy meat from a butcher than any supermarket.

It might not be as bad as you predict.......although I concede that fuel prices will probably have a knock on effect at some point but that would affect everyone, Netto are hardly impervious to these costs.

I'm with bitsy here - I shop at whatever supermarket sends me an online voucher - ocado, asda or sainsburys - I spend 70-100 once a month, primarily on the value brand of each store, then buy my meat and veg locally. I doubt your shopping will increase as much as you fear with some careful shopping

I actually agree with the original poster, I like Netto particularly for its prices and offers, even though the shop itself seems a bit haphazard. Their dogfood is masses cheaper than anywhere else. I don't like Aldi, I think it's expensive and has completely capitalised on the craze to use cut price shops by putting its prices up. I don't know much about Lidl either as I don't have one of those but I feel all these cut price stores have been lumped together as if they're all the same which they're not.

There's no Asda near me so I don't have any experience of it, but I really will miss Netto and the quirky offers as well as the brilliant prices I've had recently on things such as coffee, Yorkshire tea, baked beans, tuna, flower and veg seeds, fresh veg, milk - well most things really. I've tried Aldi on several occasions and always regretted it and been disappointed, very surly staff too.

Here, to go to Farmfoods, Home Bargains, Wilkos etc involves hassle and costly parking, lugging stuff back to the car etc, whereas Netto is on the edge of town and easy to use. I will mourn its passing!!!

How do you know they are supermarket snob, and how do you know they are £100 poorer?

I walk out of Morrisons every day, but I am not a snob and never £100 poorer. I shop at Morrisons because it is less than a minutes walk from my house. I live on my own and don't spend £100 a quarter!

I dont' have a Netto any where near me, if I did I would probably use it.

Same all those who currently don't live near a Netto, shop somewhere else and get a called a supermarket snob who is £100 poorer every time they shop at somewhere other than Netto.

What you really need to be worried about is all those supermarket snobs who will be laughing at you and saying "What goes around, comes around.".

im very sad netto is going, ours is next to hb so very handy - anyway it's closing down in a couple of weeks, not even changing to asda express or whatever they are going to call them. i feel very sad for the staff as most of them have been there years and they're all being made redundant.

    Mixed responses........

I'll site an example though! I buy Typhoo tea, Netto sell the 200's boxes for £1.67 when the box itself says £3.99!!!

If I go into Sainsbury's, Tesco, Morrisons, im pretty sure ill be paying the full whack! :(

Netto do Mcains oven chips at £1 a bag, the best lean mince EVER for £3.80 (2 packs).... A bottle of milk is nearly 40p less than the competitors too. How about 3 packs of fantastic (no joke) rich tea biscuits for £1, your lucky to get one pack for that anywhere else! £2 for Kellogs crunchy nut corn flakes (£2.80 last time I looked in Tesco's).
Lots and lots of top brand name products at knock down prices!!

It may not seem like a lot, but we all know how these things add up! The quality is never as bad as people say, I think that's all just idle gossip and yes "supermarket snobbery", propegated by the major supermarkets no doubt!

You did of course always have to be careful what your buying, but that applies anywhere.

where are u getting your "facts" from?

they are actually doubling the number of staff in each store if the takeover goes ahead.... which it has not done so yet as it needs to be passed by the competition commission

don't speculate without knowing the facts
