We have 2 policies with Budget Insurance. Both state crystal clearly (on what is page 4 of 14 pages - on the back of the page which states "Your Policy Payment Arrangement"), Automatic Renewal. "We reserve the right to automatically renew this policy and we will take the payment from cc card ********with the last 4 digits here". It also gives the phone number to opt out of the auto process.

Infuriatingly cheeky IMO and not in the policy info or key facts, but I'm afraid it IS there.

My problem with Budget has been their choice of underwriter for my buildings insurance. A company called MMA - whose customer service skills STINK. For this reason I'm moving on renewal from Budget, and will always ensure when I renew a policy I know whether the agent stays involved in the event of a claim and exactly who the underwriters are.

PS Budget won't remove auto authorisation to renew unless you are actually the named policy holder. Doesn't matter that I am named on it as joint policy holder! Now THAT is seriously annoying.

Can I remind you it's home insurance

    Fair enough.
That means the consequences are arguably worse but arguably less likely.
Instead of having your car crushed and/or being prosecuted, now your entire house can burn down with nothing to pay for it.

I would still argue the consequesnes are pretty bad, so the same arguments about auto-renewal apply.
