They may be able to argue that they sent the renewal documents and it is reasonable to suppose that you received them.
However, the FSA's "Treating Customers Fairly" initiatives has six intended outcomes.
Outcome 3 is "Consumers are provided with clear information and are kept appropriately informed before, during and after the point of sale."
Outcome 5 is "Consumers are provided with products that perform as firms have led them to expect, and the associated service is of an acceptable standard and as they have been led to expect."
Outcome 6 is "Consumers do not face unreasonable post-sale barriers imposed by firms to change product, switch provider, submit a claim or make a complaint."
You might be able to put up a successful argument that one or more of these outcomes has not been achieved.0 -

But we didn't receive a renewal notice letter just a letter saying our insurance had been renewed. We phoned immediately and told them we didn't want the insurance renewed and hadn't received any notice.
Not to worry, Heather. The failure of people to read a simple post telling them what happened is not the fault of the poster!42 years of experience in the insurance industry.
And nothing the industry tries do to us surprises me any more!0 -

Same would apply to those that fail to realise my response was to specific comments made in the thread (as indicated by the quotes included in my post).I am an Independent Financial Adviser (IFA). Of course, I see it now! When the OP highlights a specific instance where there was no renewal letter for her to read, the obvious response is to berate those who may not read (or understand) the renewal notices that ARE received. How silly of me!
And I notice you completely avoided any comment on the adequacy of the OP's broker.42 years of experience in the insurance industry.

BTW - I have used companies that don't auto-renew for years and never have this hassle.0 -
Make a complaint? and ask them to refund it?

Which seems to be a good argument against auto-renewal.:)42 years of experience in the insurance industry.

I didnt quote the OP so she was wrong to assume I was referring to her as were you.
The most common problem with auto-renewal is not reading it. Not understanding it is not an excuse. If you cant understand a "what to do next" paragraph in a short letter then you shouldnt be driving and putting other peoples lives at risk.I am an Independent Financial Adviser (IFA). If people can't manage auto renewal (which is as simple as remebering a dental appointment or family birthday) then it can be aurgued that there is a risk of them going uninsured which is far worse.
I still think the consequences of not renewing (prosecution for example) are far worse than the consequences of forgetting to lapse.
But if people don't like it, why don't they use the companies that don't do it??? simples0 -
Can I remind you it's home insurance0

And there's no mention of auto-renewal in the policy or in the Key Facts. We didn't receive the renewal invite letter, the subsequent letter had the wrong postcode but found us this time and they'd already renewed our policy without agreement.0
