I think the main point being made here, other than the original thread point, is that mainly due to text speak, local street slang and the declining of the standard of education in the UK, The correct use of the English language has now reached an all time low, in fact to a point that on some occasions it is only just understandable. I see this on a regular basis and believe it is a very poor state of affairs when I often decide between candidates, in a primarily engineering field, on their standard of use of the language.

I tend to find people educated here have a very good standard equal with Southern Ireland followed by Scotland and Wales, then comes those from international education systems that have the teaching of English as a priority. Now what saddens me is that people from the UK have the poorest understanding of their own language.
When are people their going to wake up and realise text speak and street slang is not 'cool', it does not make you look good and it certainly does not get you jobs, (in fact quite the opposite). You have allowed your schools to fall into the hands of fools and charlatans, and you pay the price. It is about time people woke up and realised that the reason people are not getting jobs is not due to an influx of cheap labour but instead because employers are sick and tired of dealing with people with an uneducated, lazy work-shy attitude who think the world owes them a living. If you look the part and speak the part then we will believe you can play the part.

In 1946, George Orwell published “Politics and the English Language”, and in it, he analysed the effects of the political world on the English language. In this essay, he states, “A man may take to drink because he feels himself to be a failure, and then fail all the more completely because he drinks. It is rather the same thing that is happening to the English language. It becomes ugly and inaccurate because our thoughts are foolish, but the slovenliness of our language makes it easier for us to have foolish thoughts.” In making this statement, his point is that the process is reversible. Written Modern English is full of mistakes that go unnoticed or uncorrected and thus allows these mistakes to spread and be thought of as “correct use” of Modern English. Only by addressing failures in the educational system and the way children use language can this be reversed.

Words seem to have become more puzzling than they once were, even to the purportedly educated. A list of confusions is easily compiled. “Partly” does not mean “partially;” nor historic, historical; nor philosophic, philosophical; nor sensuous, sensual; nor religiosity, religiousness; nor belligerent, bellicose; nor feminine, effeminate; nor beneficent, benevolent; nor continuous, continual; nor effete, epicene; “It is important that you do not smoke” is not the same as “It is important that you not smoke.” “The new airplane is five times faster than the old” probably does not mean anything at all; if it does, it means “The new airplane is six times as fast as the old.” The word “disingenious” does not exist, though I hear it from the educated. (“Disingenuous” is meant.). I feel I have now lost 90% of people reading this.

I recently had the pleasure of discovering and transcribing some letters written by family members in the early 1800s (yes, almost 200 years ago!). These were written by ordinary people about ordinary life, but the use of language and the expressiveness is probably a lot better than what even the typical "well educated" person of today could write. Those people knew how to write a letter!

What will possibly be preserved of our personal communications today for our descendants to be able to recover 200 years from now?

Edited to add: I have deliberately shortened my reply so as not to confuse those who may have difficulty in comprehending the full context.
