My broad band has slowed down

For the last 4 years I have been getting a consistent 56KB down load speeds but recently it has been slowing to around 30KB and in the last couple of weeks sometimes it is dropping down to 12KB [4]. It's got to the stage when some things you can make a cup of tea, come back and it still hasn't finished loading.
I rang the ISP and they had me do 101 tests that made absolutely no difference to the speed [3]. They told me to ring back if it was still bad which I'm about to do but I get the feeling I'll be doing the same stuff all over again and getting no where fast. What can I do to get them to listen to me and actually do something to sort out my problem? ...

sorry about the dots forum wouldn't do it any other way[1]
ADSL Link .............. Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed ........864 kbps 448 kbps [2]
Line Attenuation ............. 63 db 15.5 db
Noise Margin .................... 6 db 9 db
Down stream figures here have improved this morning but on speed test it's the same as before, tried downloading a file and the speed was about 14K per sec
Plugged in to bt socket behind cover had no effect
[2] It looks to me like you actually have at least a 1 Mb/s service, if not an 'up to 8MB/s' service. But the 63dB downstream attenuation would limit this to the 864kb/s downstream connection you see.
[3] Who is your ISP? This is very relevant to what the problem is and how likely you are to fix it. Bear in min that the tests would not be expected to improve your speed - just to diagnose what your problem might be - or with an ISP lacking technical competence in the call centre, the tests are just to waste your time while making it all appear too hard to solve. I am surprised that the ISP has not drawn your attention to the router statistics highlighted above in blue
[4] Are these speeds in bits per second [b/s] or Bytes per second [B/s]? On your router stats, I would expect a download speed of about 80kB/s - but this could vary through the day - I would expect your download speed to vary quite a bit.Hi, we’ve had to remove your signature. The 6 dB on the SNR margin shows thats it is a steady line, not prone to sudden bursts of noise or disconnnections during the day/night. If it was such a line the DSLAM at the exchange would have upped the default to 9, 12, 15 DB.
The 63 DB on attenuation shows that it is indeed a long line - and might be even longer as I recall hearing somewhere that routers only report attenuation up to 63 and anything more is....well still reported as 63.0 -
It's doing my head in now the stats haven't changed but now it's downloading at over 50K per sec, up from 14K yesterdayNothing to see here, move along.0

The problem may be that you get your Internet via BT, Tesco/Virgin lease the line, many people have found the on BT access product they have throttled speeds especially in the evening peak times.
Did you look at samknows to confirm there are no LLU operators at your exchange.?That gum you like is coming back in style.0 -
My exchange (Toddington Beds) has adsl only, not even adsl2. It's only a small exchange and hasn't got LLU. I have looked at other providers and they are all more expensive than what I have already. When it works properly it's fine and I don't have any download limits, if I go else where I they are all limited. We are in a small village just outside Luton and we are off another village exchange, NTL didn't come here, 3 miles in any direction we would have that but were stuck in the middle of everything. My mate used to live about a mile away and had the choice of Virgin or ADSL at 5M. What can you do except move and I'm not doing that just for faster broadband.Nothing to see here, move along.0
