My broad band has slowed down

I'm having trouble with my ADSL broadband, I have a 512Kb service as where I live this is about all I can get and there isn't any Cable here.

For the last 4 years I have been getting a consistent 56KB down load speeds but recently it has been slowing to around 30KB and in the last couple of weeks sometimes it is dropping down to 12KB. It's got to the stage when some things you can make a cup of tea, come back and it still hasn't finished loading.

I rang the ISP and they had me do 101 tests that made absolutely no difference to the speed. They told me to ring back if it was still bad which I'm about to do but I get the feeling I'll be doing the same stuff all over again and getting no where fast. What can I do to get them to listen to me and actually do something to sort out my problem?

I just run a speed test from speedtest.net which is usually fairly reliable and my results were ping 61 ms, down stream 0.14 Mb/s and upstream 0.35 Mb/s. My upstream is faster than the down stream? :undecided

    Hi there

Try HERE to see if there are any faster suppliers in your area. We did this and then phoned our existing supplier to say "Fred Bloggs is providing faster broadband than you" and got the usual fobb off about reported speeds not being the actual speed, but our speeds suddenly increased!!

If all else fails, you can move to the faster provider.

How are you actually connecting? Ethernet, wireless. Router, USB modem?
Suggest you retry the speed test with your router/modem plugged into the BT test socket (behind the NTE5 master socket split faceplate). This will isolate any problem with your extension wiring.
Have you got ADSL filters on all active extensions? Swap them out in turn for known good ones if necessary-filters can and do go bad.

As above, if you have a router could you post your router statistics?

That gum you like is coming back in style.
  • I've tried connecting to the master socket with different filters and I get the same results. I swapped over filter with no effect.

You need to use the BT test socket, not the master socket. The BT test socket is behind the split faceplate on your master socket, just undo the two screws and pull the lower half forward to access it. Your ISP should already have been through this procedure with you.
    Router stats?

Are you on a old capped 0.5Mbps service, or is that simply the maximum you can get due to distance from the exchange?
    Which ISP please?

  • Yes it's 500kbps capped but I'm on a long line anyway, the joys of village life. ISP is tesco.net which uses virgin servers.

I'm with tesco on a 0.5mb connection and have noticed that in the last few months or so its been getting slow especially in the evenings. It hasn't been so bad within the last week or so though.

I tend to find its faster to download large files during the day rather than overnight (whereas it used to be better overnight)

I still think you are best off looking to see who else provides the service in your area. I had mine running at 2Mbps and it suddenly went up to 10 when I told them another provider could do better. I just did another test and its come out at 10.3 so I'm happy.
