  • When my partner put in his claim for JSA(cb) the Job Centre didnt say anything or give him any forms to claim H/B, we didnt think we were entitled to it, until I found some info on these boards then went and claimed H/B myself, so did lose about 3 months of H/B.

Sorry to hijack your thread....but why is it that some people are allowed to keep an extra £15 of LHA? Do the LHA's just sent rents for different size properties and pay those rents even if landlord are charging less?

Yep. But due to change very soon.

Good, it was supposed to stop a long time ago and its right that no claimant makes a profit.

Up to a maximim of £15 per week, yes. It was done to encourage people to shop around and make specific financial decisions, like the rest of us. Get somewhaere cheap, have more £ in your pocket, somewhere more expensive, have less £ in your pocket. It was also hoped that this might mean an overall downward pressure on rents.

As said, this will soon end.

It was done to encourage people to take certain financial responsibilities, the same as the rest of us, and to prevent slum landlords from just charging maximum LHA for any old toss.

Oh no you're not. You have never had to tell the JC+ anything of the kind.
You do have to tell the JCP about your savings though - and £1000 more than you had is enough of a change to have to declare it.

    Somewhat of a simplification Willy.

It was done to encourage people WHO CLAIMED THEIR HOUSING COSTS FROM THE STATE to take certain financial responsibilities the same as the rest of us, and to prevent slum landlords AND/OR ANY LANDLORD from just charging maximum LHA for any old toss WHICH PREVIOUSLY WOULD HAVE BEEN INSPECTED BEFORE HB WAS GRANTED AT A REASONABLE MARKET RENT FIGURE.

Like many things the concept was probably good but the application proved different.

Of course you do. But this is well below the benefit threshold for any claimant. I reiterate that it is not necessary to inform JSA about loans from parents. The level of the benefit threshold is another question for discussion entirely.

Rightly or wrongly, but I am not making a judgemental decision - merely offering advice under the rules.

I don't want a pedantic war of semantics..... but....

ANY LL who charges top whack for toss relying on vulnerable tenants is and always has been a slum LL.

Even under HB, many rented properties weren't inpected at all. Market rents were ascertained from rents charged for similar properties in the area. The things that made a difference wouldn't necessarily identify a poor property AND the inspection was only carried out AFTER the tenant claimed HB.

    .

I don't either Willy! And I fear we would both commandeer the OP's thread and bore the toots of other contributors. Call it a truce, mate, and perhaps we will meet again in the discussion thread.
