A 4 cylinder 6 speed 1.3 Auris isn't a 3 cylinder 5 speed 1.0 Corsa - hence the difference, but even in the Auris 6th at 30 isn't a good idea, this will increase fuel consumption.0

Yeah give it a try driving differently this week - if you're the type of person to do it you can easily check the exact mileage you're doing per week by resetting the odometer when the fuel light comes on, fill it up and see how many miles you do before the light comes on again0

another thing to think about is what fuel station do you use??? some supermarket fuel can be of inferior quality to say shell and end up causing mpg problems due to poor burn etc.there is a reason why they are so much cheaper than the big oil giants.
just to add 5th gear in a 1.0 corsa will definatly increase fuel use,it will be burning more when accelerating from 30mph in 5th than accelerating from same speed in 3rd or 4th.give it a go at staying in lower gears around the town see how it works.0 -

No.
Brim it - reset the odometer, drive and then brim it again - work out MPG from fuel put in and the miles covered.
No other way is accurate.0 -
i use sainsburys, my husband got quite a bit more mpg from there compared to tesco in his old Avensis surprisingly, so we've used them since....i don't have a shell that near by. I only use 5th etc when i am on a road I know i am going to be stuck at 30/40 on, and don't have to worry about accelerating changing gears etc. I've just filled up and reset the odometer, i'll give it a try this week and let you know how i get on. Just reading through some reviews and lots of other people with the same engine as mine have reported about 27mpg or bad fuel economy....the reviews for the bigger engined cars and the diesels are obviously a lot better
thanks everyone :-)0 -

i have already worked out the mpg from filling it to light flashing (that was scary)...which is how i got to 20...my hubby has noticed its bad on fuel but didn't believe me, so we're doing it again....
i've also done it from just putting abit in, until light is on but hubby said that'll never give a true mpg and to fill it totally then run it down?
obviously sounding a bit thick, are you suggesting fill it to the brim, drive some miles (clocking it) then fill to brim and note miles again?0 -

Well if you brim it, drive some miles then brim it again you can tell from how much fuel goes in how much has been used.
I've found doing it between when the light comes on works fine - be careful letting the light flash because that really is taking it to the limit!
When the light comes on there is a gallon left, when the light starts flashing you're about to run out!

MPG sounds about right. It'll have spent most of its time in your ownership running on cold start (equivalent of running on choke) because it never has time to get fully warmed up. One of the side effects of that is that the spark plugs get sooted up from continually running on a rich mixture so don't work as well hence the car feels down on power.
Best thing to do is to put some redex in the tank, take it out into the country and drive it like you stole it for half an hour.0 -

thanks johnny, i'' ring them tomorrow to see what they suggest, shame it's not near by - means more fuel!!
I drive around town in THIRD. Fifth gear is for cruising. I get >55MPG out of my Ford Mondeo. My wife has a 2.0L V6 Mitsubishi FTO. Its four speed autobox drives around town in second gear. She gets 33MPG.0
