Contents Insurance rejected

I have tried to get a quote for contents insurance only, but I have had subsidence in the last two years, which is now being monitored and has been fixed.
I was also burgled in December 04. I didn't have insurance. Apart from the obvious response of "you should of had insurance". Can anyone recommend a solution to this Catch 22 situation. Noone seems to want to insure. There must be a solution? The area I live in is not known for high crime.

Regards.

  • I can't see why subsidence should affect you getting a quote for contents insurance? Buildings insurance certainly but contents no. Also, if you were uninsured when the burglary occured and therefore didnt claim, surely this shouldn't affect a quote for contents either? Sounds a bit strange to me....

I know its strange - but a number of providers do seem to reject contents cover ( edit - I originally accidentally typed claim) if aware of any subsidence problems.

burglary- usual question is claim OR loss

Your comments seem to be valid to a point.
As insurance company's protocols should now be set in procedures, surely the question of subsidence re: contents insurance, should be asked at the time of obtaining a quotation. Or are they? Or do they just want to refund premiums if a claim is made.

There must be more 'crystal clear' information available for 'The Man on the Clapham Omnibus'.

Not sure about your comment regarding burglary.

brm- sorry its was a typing error meant to say - reject cover rather than claims.

"Not sure about your comment regarding burglary."

I mean a fairly standard question on proposal is

Have you ( or at property) had an incident , loss , damage or liabiliity during the last X years - whether insured or not.

This is may not therefore be the same as " any claims in last X yrs"

Although not immediately obvious i can see why subsidence may increase the risk for contents insurance. In its extreme subsidence could cause damage to the house contents... for example a moving wall causes an shelf to fall off holding say a lit candle..voila whole house up in flames ..... ok extreame but possible.

I take it you have buildings insurance? If not that is more of a risk and I would worry about that first!. If you have the building insurer is more likely to accept your contents cover.
  • The easiest solution is to go to your existing buildings insurers to add contents cover to your policy. If they don't offer it then you will just need to shop around but in view of your loss history I would go and see a broker to do that for you.

Thanks for the debate guys and girls. Contents insurance is effected because if the walls fall down the contents would be damaged. At the moment it's a dead end. Catch 22, egg and the chicken, no quotes still!!

    Thanks for the feedback..

The answer is be very, very, careful and don't give your good hard earned money to insurance companies.

  • Try Budget Home Insurance as a relation of mine got contents insurance after a recent burglary or failing that try a local insurance broker.asking friends to recommend one that gives a good personal service is probably the best idea.

    Hope this helps
