have the roads changed that much that the update is essential?

im using an old garmin, i bought it second hand 4 years ago and its apparently been needing updated since i got it,but i find if i mix the satnav with common sense then i find my way no problem.
i haven't used it for a while, these days i just use my google maps on my iphone.

maybe not "essential" in the way that breathing is - but would be helpful when he's trying to find a house and the road isn't on his map...!!

I can't figure out how to put tomtom maps on the navman, so I think we will be buying a new (secondhand) one for Fathers Day!

Get a Nokia phone with free Sat Nav updates for life. About £100. Holder and car charger from E-Bay, about £5.

Trouble is the TomTom @ 45 quid will probably be out of date as well and they are quite expensive to update
Whats the model of the Navman
    Have a nice day :)

That is more than we can afford for his fathers day present, but thanks for the suggestion.

Cost of map updates is so high that I take the view it's best to buy one, keep it as long as possible, don't bother to update maps and then replace it with something brand new a few years later.

My Nokia phone with the free maps doesn't work out as well as I hoped. Cannot mount it in the car properly, takes longer to pick up gps signals and doesn't work well in built up cities anyway. I think the antenna is too small for it to be as good as a dedicated sat. nav.

I thought you could just update the tomtom maps from the website? (i.e. for free?)

The navman is a ICN 710.

Really appreciate everyone's help on this - I don't have a sat nav, so I'm doing this blind...!!

Don't buy the maps for US. Cheapest way is to either buy one on Ebay that has US maps or otherwise buy one from Walmart or similar when you arrive. You only need a basic cheap one for your hols and Walmart or the other large supermarkets usually have good offers on for something in the Sat Nav line.

DO NOT get one through the car hire/rental companies. Sat Nav (or GPS as they call them in the US) is the new car insurance scam at the rental desk.

I bought a second hand TOM TOM on Ebay with all N America and have used it in US and Canada twice in past 12 months. To have used car rental option I would now be over £100 worse off!!! And of course I still have it to either sell on or use again.

Why would you need a Sat-Nav in the USA?

Their roads are so huge and easy to follow.
