Sat Navs - upgrade or buy new??

Not sure if this should be here or on the tech board - but we'll have a go here first...!

My Dad has a Navman sat nav system, which was, at the time it was bought, pretty top of the range - anyway, long story short, since Navman was taken over, they no longer update the street maps, so Dad is left with a sat nav which is out of date, and not updateable.

So - is there anyway that the satnav map can be updated??

I have the opportunity to buy a tomtom one v3 sat nav for £45 - so not sure if we should just go along this route (excuse the pun!)or if the maps can be updated?

Any help??
Why does nobody say Thank You anymore??

Our navman was bought on special at Argos (as it had been lying on the shelf for ages I suppose). The battery has never been any good and it always had to be on charge.
So i'd go for a new one

Thanks for that - the Navman Dad has got has done him really well - which is why I don't want to spend cash to replace it if it's not necessary - sorry to hear about yours - you should take it back to argos.

Lol - but thanks for taking the time to reply...!! Dad is a professional driver, so it is easier to have someone tell him which way to go than him have to spend time planning a route..!

Any map will be out of date the moment it's bought. Once a new road is built / built over, you need an update. It's questionable whether satnav updates are more frequent than print updates (it took google 3 years to even recognise the new build postcode where I used to live).

The trick with a print map is that you (consciously or otherwise) memorise the surrounding area so that if there's a road closure or you miss your turn, you can easily find a way round with your own mental compass. This would help greatly with the following scenario:

Personally, I take a quick look at google earth to visualise the destination (not necessarily the whole route) to find landmarks which maps and satnavs don't always show. Each to their own, but any satnav owner will find the backup A to Z in their glovebox a godsend one day.

Dave - If he knew his destination before he left home, he would be able to google earth/street view it - but as he doesn't know where he is going until he gets to work, it's more difficult.
Oh, and he is 60 and technology is not his friend...!!!

Struggling with the GPS underground website at the mo - it is huge!!

I'd just buy the TomTom. Make sure it has the latest maps though else there's no point.

I sold my TT ONE V3 and bought a V4 instead of updating its maps, worked out cheaper :rotfl:
