Not all hazel produces nuts, but if they do up your way, make a note of the bushes that produce nuts (September-ish here).

New hazel shoots grow tall and straight with flexibility, you are doing the untended bushes a favour if you cut out the branches that might rub against the more established shape of the bush and allow disease to get into the wounds.

I think of it as free coppicing :cool:
