Having just failed to get a 'Sun' holiday I am trying to find something similar - i.e. mobile home for a week on the South West coast in France.
We can go anytime from 19th July during school holidays but the cheapest I have found so far is about £700 - with the Sun it would have been about £200!! . Anyone got any useful tips? I have chedked all the usual big companies Eurocamp, Siblu etc

Take a look at this website, we travelled with them to the Royan campsite (this area has Med weather if not hotter) and we had a great time.

Dont think you will get a holiday as cheap as the Sun holiday though, you could also try Canvas Holidays, remember to try and barter the price a bit when you ring particularly with Canvas. A few years back they were quite accommodating with us in order to try and get out custom, of course it might be different now.2008£3002009£13002010£15002011£41952012£21942013£1494

I agree, Matthews is by far the cheapest way to do France. However, I would seriousley recomend upgrading the van (we have had a couple of shockers)tand if you are used yo a team of reps, infomation vans, kids clubs etc forget it!! There are usually a couple in a mobile home running the whole thing themselves. However, if you have done this type of holiday before and know what to expect, they are a bargain. We have used them 3 times. Only using Siblu this year coz we has Tesco vouchers to use up.:D0

Eurocamp are doing an offer at the moment for early july £579 I think but the last day to start is 17th -if you can bring it forward that seems a good buy.0

You could try direct holiday homes, owners doing private rentals have never used them but came across their site when I was looking for a caravan holiday.0

How would you feel about just packing up the kit yourselves and going? There's plenty of affordable camping gear around to buy - new or second-hand, and the 'Camping municipal' sites in France are great. We bought a not-very-expensive caravan 15 years ago, and have used it in France every year since - total average cost now around £10 per night, as we've found a lovely 'camping a la ferme' site we adore and gp back to every year, about 7km inland. If you're prepared to try to speak a little French and to explore, I would really recommend it. The French love camping, and are very used to families turning up at 'their' sites - far friendlier and more cost-effective than anything we ever found in the UK - my only regret was that we didn't try it years earlier. The further SW you are prepared to go, & a little way inland, the better, in my experience. Good luck, and enjoy!!Reason for edit? Can spell, can't type!0

Thanks we do camp in this country but am put off a bit by taking a trailer to France and also with the idea of it being rather hot in the tent (not a problem in the UK!!) I had also thought sites were too expensive but your camping a la ferme sounds a bargain! I will look into this idea. Will give Matthews a try too thanks to all who replied.0 -

You doi way better looking at a private gite rental TBH. We have done this a lot and always have a good time. THe only time I wouldf suggest you are very wary of this is travelling with children of an age that you need to keep an eye onthem all the time!! STandards in rental homes abroad are not he same as in the UK. Whilst we have not had anything that spoiled out holidays, if the kids had been 3 under 5s at the time we'd have had a nightmare in some properties eg:
Standard supplied cots seem to be of the antique sort with bars the right width for a child to get a head stuck, and sides so shallow a standing baby would fall out...
Buildings always seem to have something unfinshed.....usually wiring and often in the bathroom and live:eek:
Windows open nice and wide, often full height (with a foot of decorative iron work at the bottom maybe) on the first floor, with a sheer drop ontothe street....
We have had lovely places with interconnecting rooms and corridor that would allow you to chase a laughing toddler for hours and not catch them..... Or stair cases so steep that you have to got up them like a laddder...
and the place that was the real 'elf n safety prize.. On the 1st floor (over a disused wine cave full of old cr*p that you walked through, and could park in) with access from the cave up a steep flight of concrete steps, that came out in the centre of the courtyard upstairs- sort of nice, but then you realised that anyone could fall down- not only down the stairs (bad enough) but down the "back side " IYSWIM of the stair well- y'know if you stand at the bottom of a straight flight of stairs- you could just fall straight down from the patio directly above your head!). Even though the youngest was 9 at the time I did hae a few anxieties about that!0 -
I've used French freedom a couple of times.0

Hi
We've just bought our first caravan and are looking to take it to France in late July for a holiday - could you let me have the details of any campsites that you have thought particularly good? We've used it a few times in this country and prefer the "CL" type sites so are not looking for a lot of facilities, just electric, water and toilet emptying facilities. We are fairly flexible on the area where we want to go too! Thanks in advance:hello:0 -
