Does the laptop have an ethernet connection?

If you are sure it doesn't have one..

then you can buy them from https://www.ebuyer.com for a few quid (if you have a spare slot)

or you could get an wireless adapter for the PC, but that is more expensive and more hassle (especially if the pc is next to the phone point/router)
Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time?

    I need a beer

Found the ethernet socket which I never knew I had as it is hidden behind all my other sockets and wires were covering it

Slowen - if it's your new Acer laptop you're connecting wirelessly, I'd suggest you don't let Windows manage your wireless connection, but use the Atheros Client Utility (click START then point to All Programs.....Atheros......click Atheros Client Utility if it doesn't start automatically). I found it much better and it allowed me to set up WPA security, whereas Windows would only allow me to set up WEP for some reason in spite of updating XP Pro to SP2.

And regarding the Acer model no......it says 2410 on my laptop screen and 2414WLMi on the sticker near the keyboard, so  .
