just uninstall your old modem from add / remove programs then put the CD for your wireless router in the cd drive and the wizard should just take you through all the required steps to get it up and runningEx forum ambassador

Setting up security can be fiddly if you have never done it before.

Plug it into the ethernet wired connection and setup the router wired first, then setup the wireless encryption.
You don't have to uninstall the old modem, or tell your isp.Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time? :rolleyes:0 -
My password I use to access the internet on my supanet account, will I still need to access this or will the router take over?
I presume once the wireless router is installed I can still use my normal broadband account and don't have to set up a new one?
I have no idea so any advice welcome0 -
You tell the router your id and password, and then whenever the pc is plugged into a switched on router, or via wireless, you are on the internet. There is no dialling to do.
Which model of router do you have?Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time? :rolleyes:0 -

Linksys WGKPC354G-UK
Picked it up from PC World today after seeing on the "grabbit" section as it was £39.99for the wireless router and a notebook wireless card0 -
Stick the CD in, connect it up with a wired connection and follow the setup prompts. To make it secure, choose a ssid which doesn't identify you, disable ssid broadcasting, and get a secure wpa encryption key from https://www.grc.com/passwords. Also change the default router password.
Then stick the pcmcia card (if your laptop doesn't have one already), and install that, tell it the ssid you have chosen, and paste the same 63 character encryption key in.
You can also get to the router config screen by going to http://192.168.1.1 in ie.Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time? :rolleyes:0 -

So basically install the stuff from the CD then plug in the router and hopefully everything should work, do you need to connect all your extra's e.g. wireless laptop and wired xbox 360 via ethernet as soon as you install the router?
My laptop apparantly has built in wireless so hopefully should recognise my connection0 -
Can't help with the xbox, maybe someone else can advise.
Once you've installed it on the main PC. If the ssid is being broadcast, then your laptop should pick it up, and let you attach to it. However I suggest you disable the ssid broadcasting once you have set it up, as a security measure. Have a look through the first link I posted, it should answer a lot of questions, but the detailed instructions are for Netgear routers
The router needs to be plugged into a PC/laptop via ethernet when you run setup.Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time? :rolleyes:0 -
Just tried to setup and when tring to connect I do not have an ethernet socket in the back of my PC
Is there any way around this? and the ethernet cable supplied is a very tight fit into the router (is this correct)0 -
Does the laptop have an ethernet connection?
Provided that you are not forceing it in, it should be ok,Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time? :rolleyes:0
