The reason you make your own bread is not just the moneysaving, it's the smell while it's baking and the taste when it's finished.

My kids won't eat shop bread anymore, I think it is cheaper, but the taste outweighs the cost
Mama read so much about the dangers of drinking alcohol and eating chocolate that she immediately gave up reading.

I got a breadmaker for xmas and was wondering if its cheaper to make your own bread or buy it?
Store bought pre-mixes can be OK, Lidl also do a nice range, but not a big hassle to make your own mixes.
Electricity-wise, my Morphy Richards FastBake uses: 0.347KwH to make a large Wholemeal loaf, 0.393KwH (on delayed start) Large White. At my tarif (Eco7 £0.047p/Kwh Low/ £0.21226/KwH Normal) the costs are (respectively): £0.018p; £0.079p and £0.018; £0.083p per loaf. ie even on delayed start, normal tarif just a tad more than 8p per loaf in energy costs.
Also as others have said you get additive-free excellent bread.

I find that I can make premium bread for the price of regular ;) So it's worth it to me.

As this has fallen from the front page of OS, I'll addd it to the existing thread to give you more opinions.

I use an electric knife and have struggled to slice doorsteps, what i do now is put the loaf into the freezer for an hour or two, long enough that it's not frozen but it's not squashy. You'll find that's easier.to cut straight.and thin.

We've had our Panasonic for over 2 years now and I use it on a daily basis. It is cheaper to use a breadmaker - I use bread flour rather than the mixes. Apart from the freshness, smell and great taste - you also know that there aren't any preservatives etc in your homemade bread.

I treated myself to an electric slicing machine - the Cookworks one from Argos, c £30 - well worth it, as I can slice a loaf into perfect slices before freezing it. It will also slice meat etc.

Made my first loaf today and it came out well though was a bit salty as i put in a tbsp rather than a tsp! Oh well. Have realised that i will need an electric knife or a set of decent knives though - my brother did promise me to get me them for my birthday which was months ago so am going to start hassling him! ;)
