Bread Maker - worth it?

You can make wholegrain in a breadmaker, but only you can decide if worth the extra effort & faffing [add grains "on the beep" etc]
Ach! before I had a machine with the thing to drop the seeds in I just put them in at the beginning with everything else.
As the OP said, being able to conjure up bread when it's needed is brilliant. I throw away far less bread than when I used to buy it.
I make pizza dough (did pizza for 8 at lunch time today), naan bread and so on.
Price is cheaper than similar bread of shop type and so much nicer.
You know what's in it.
just editing to say... even if it cost more to make, I would still do it, it's about quality of life and what we like to eat."Knowledge is knowing that a tomato is a fruit. Wisdom is not putting it in a fruit salad"

We don't have a breadmaker because my problem is that my DH and DDs eat like horses and the loaves I got form my old one about 4 yrs ago were really small. But I am thinking of maybe getting one in the sale that makes a 2lb loaf.0

My raisin tray stopped working, so I now add raisins, nuts, seeds, etc at the beginning of a cycle, and have noticed no differenceNo faffing here any longer :j

Thanks Jinky
I'm sure with a few practises the bread will get better and the "hole" won't be too much of a problem.. it's fun though, I can't wait for lunch today:hello:Loan 1: £8300 -Loan 2: £20,000 (joint) Total Debt: £28,300:eek:DFD: June 20140 -
The hole should only affect a few of the slices, and if the bread is sliced with the loaf sitting upright and the hole at the bottom then only part of the crusts will have some wee bits missing, enjoy your lunch.Slimming World..Wk1,..STS,..Wk2,..-2LB,..Wk3,..-3.5lb,..Wk4,..-2.5,..Wk5,..-1/2lb,Wk6,..STS,..Wk7,..-1lb.

l go to a flour mill at Bugbrooke, Northants. They will sell direct to the public.
I get 16kg sacks of Canadian White Flour for about £11
I also like their low G.I. multi seed breadmix - 16kg for about £19
I get the yeast in a packet too. Measure just what you need. CBA faffing with those sachets!
I've been using my Panasonic breadmaker for over a year now. Love it!Best wins: ITV Real Deal CASH,Trip to Lapland.0 -

You don't need a breadmaker to make bread. Thiriftlady (I think) handbakes..Yes breadmakers are jolly useful gadgets especially if your hands aren't strong. If I hadn't tried out a breadmaker some years ago I'd never have got into hand baking. The hole in the loaf drove me mad. I am sure they save you money because what you produce in them is so superior to a factory produced loaf which has a whole host of weird ingredients
Warburtons medium sliced loaf contains
Wheat Flour, Water, Yeast, Salt, Vegetable Oil, Soya Flour, Emulsifiers E481, E472e, Preservative Calcium Propionate (Added To Inhibit Mould Growth) , Flour Treatments Agents Ascorbic Acid (Vitamin C), E920.
Can I just say that if you handbake you can bake more than one loaf at a time. I do four at a time and freeze extras. This not only saves fuel costs but time as well.
I have a set of photos showing my breadbaking routine from start to finish. I'll post a link to them on the handmade bread thread at the beginning of the month -can't do it yet as I've used up my quota on Flickr for December0
