    Can anyone pls help me:

I've just bought a Panasonic 254 and made my first loaf of bread.

I used Hovis strong wholemeal flour and Hovis yeast. Although it tastes ok, I thought it was a bit heavy. What should I do to make lighter brown/wholemeal loaves? (I don't really want to use white flour). Will it help if I add one or two eggs and reduce the amount of water accordingly?

    Thanks in advance.

Im not sure about this. Sorrybhz-2. I experimented with atta (whole wheat
flour found in asian shops) and strong white bread flour to make rolls yesterday and they have come out well. The recipe for rolls is 3 cups of flour so i used 1 cup of atta and 2 cups of stong white bread flour. Going keep doing this as i have so much of this flour already.

If you used all wholemeal then it will be heavy. I usually use 1/4 wholemeal to 3/4 white - it's still tasty, but not as solid as pure wholemeal. You won't get the same light, fluffy type of wholemeal which is available in the shops.
  • Does it work out a lot cheaper making your own bread? I have a machine I used to use for Sunday morning fresh bread etc etc but would it be better/cheaper to use it all the time?

As long as you compare the quality of HM with ready-prepared, HM works out cheaper for most things :D

I use my BM during the week, and make bread by hand at the weekend :j

We have a long thread on just this topic, so I'll add your post and you can see the experience of other posters.
