Many many thanks for the photos and ideas. OH has made me a trelis today with some wood posts that we already had and some green twine from poundland. This will screen the bins from the dining area once some climbers take hold and being green the trelis will disappear into the plants. I will also be using this idea in the garden to screen off DD's swing and climbing frame.
Thank you so much as I was thinking of getting 2 6x6 foot pieces of trelis which would had cost £30 plus some posts for these two jobs, so £40 altogether. Instead all I have needed is to buy three 3 meter posts (£6) and green twine (£1). So now only £7 altogether :T. The climbers will come from cuttings from around the garden.
    So  EmptyPockets

Awwww wow, thank you. I am so pleased to have been able to offer even a small bit of inspiration back. I've shown the thread to DH, and he is so so chuffed with all of the brilliant comments. It really makes all the hard work worthwhile when other people look at your garden and can enjoy it: even better when others take ideas from it! :T

Well done :T Feel a bit ashamed of our little veg in pots section..........we've got loads of potatos and herbs, runner bean plants we bought have died on us, french beans are ok and we're growing a second lot to replace the runner beans and this year having a go at broccoli..............never grown that in a container before so it might be a bit hit and miss.
    Thanks for the photos...........very inspiring:T

I'd be very interested to hear how the broccoli turns out. Don't ever feel ashamed of anything you've put hard thought and work into: it's yours, you've created it, however big or small.

Thanks for such lovely comments :)

My goodness, what a fabulous job! I am so impressed with your work. We started off trying to do things the budget way, but we didn't have the patience to wait to find materials and so ended up buying stuff new (and more expensive). I absolutely admire your abilities to reusing things in such imaginative ways! Thank you for inspiring us.

It's all so flippin' neat!

 Hmmm...Derbyshire...not all that far away. How much do you charge for a garden makeover? :p
If you lend someone a tenner and never see them again, it was probably worth it.

Thank you so much. Regarding using recycled materials... we have a garden shed come woodturning workshop for DH, roughly 22ft x 9ft - all handbuilt by us using timber that we didn't pay a penny for. It has double glazed windows in, which we also got for free... I'll have to get all the pictures together and put up another thread :D

    Haha!

Oooh believe me, it took us many many hours of staring, staring, thinking and more staring to figure it all out! To be honest, each little part of the garden has been made up as we went along, based on what we wanted the space for, what materials we had lying around, or what materials we could take from one place and use in another.

The large flower bed in front of the veggie patch was only done that way because of necessity. There was a massive hole in the middle of the lawn where a conifer tree had been pulled out, and the lawn edge was all dead and looked terrible. So, we dug it all over and shaped it the best we could to get rid of the unsightly bits :D

You garden looks delightful and you should be proud that you're achieving so much on such a tight budget. You'll be even more proud when you're starting to pick and eat ! Well done! I can't help hazarding a guess that the more successful you become with your vegetable growing, the more you'll be looking for other areas in your garden you take take over for growing more veggies. It can become addictive! I keep pinching a few inches off my lawn every year so that I can just squeeze in "one more strip of vegetables of one kind or another".

    Hello Empty pockets hun

OMG I just can not believe how wonderful your growing veggies look, you really have put me to shame!!!! I keep meaning to plant things and keep putting them off due to lack of time and money etc etc. ANd you have managed to make your garden look lovely as well as functional despite time and money issues. You are a true inspiration

Is everything just trial and error, or have you a good idea of what should go where etc. as I guess I am a bit afraid of spending lots of time and money on planting stuffs and them not growing and being terribly disappointed.

I would love to see some more photos, am off to check out your other thread.

Ah what a lovely reply, thank you! I can tell you for deffinite, everything has been trial and error. We are learning as we go, with a lot of guesswork and crossed fingers. If we can do it, anyone can. Gardening has fast become the number two joy in our lives (after each other :o)

The thing to remember is, you're on a learning curve. There is nothing to be afraid of by making mistakes: the worst that can happen is you've taught yourself something new and won't make the same mistake again! Go ahead and plant stuff. Most things you buy will come with good guidlines for planting and aftercare. And so far, we have found Mother Nature to be very forgiving of our ignorance. Everything we've planted so far has germinated and is now thriving in the garden.
