Wanted: Family Holiday Inspiration

I'm looking for something for Myself, OH, DS1 10yrs & DS2 7yrs during the school holidays :(

We've never done a package holiday as I've always booked flights & accomodation separately & tried to stay far from the madding crowd.

Last year we managed to have a fantastic 6 weeks touring the East Coast of Australia. This year we are on a shoestring though (still paying for last year).

I'd prefer 10 days away & don't mind whether we're in the UK or abroad, so long as there's plenty to do with the kids (and preferably a pool) when we get there.

I know the Spanish & Portugese resorts are popular but what do they offer apart from sunshine & sardines on the beach?

Everywhere I look at that seems cheap & cheerful OH says is a terrorist threat. Is he right, or has his cynicism got the better of him?

Any suggestions or deals appreciated as I'm :wall:

Perhaps you ought to advise him that he is in more danger of being killed on the roads enroute to the airport - that ought to make him feel better!

If you gave some indication of your total budget it would probably help people to suggest relevant ideas.

My OH is in the Forces so is very aware & suspicious. He's also not allowed to travel everywhere.

I think £1500 would be our maximum.

    Where can you fly from?

What exact dates do you have to travel?

    Thanks

Thanks Del, We're in Cambridgeshire so can fly from most English airports. I prefer Birmingham or Luton for their size & proximity. London or East Midlands are fairly easy or I'm happy to drive a bit further for the right deal.

I can't think which destinations that fall within your budget are no-go areas. Permission needs to be obtained for some places but thats usually a minor formality.

I quite fancied Morocco, but he wont hear of it. He's not even keen on Turkey.

I honestly can't think what his objections are if they are based on security or terrorism issues. Someone has gone on the rampage in the Lake District today, how could that have been forseen? I hope you find somewhere he approves of.

But do you see what I mean? The chances of getting caught up in anything 'dodgy' are so remote unless you insist on travelling somewhere that the FCO advises against all travel to.

Being in the Forces means he is probably better equipped to look after his family in the sense of being alert to possible dangers than your average 'civvy' but there's a difference between good sense and paranoia.
