Graduation Money saving?

Hi Kayteehee,
I remember when I graduated we were recommended to wear a blouse/something with buttons down the front as the gown's sash had a little loop on which held it in place.
Alternatively, take a couple of safety pins with you - always handy!
Congratulations on your achievement, and enjoy your day!0 -

That's absolutely right, it's the loop on the hood that has to be attached somewhere. I think it harks back to the days when all graduates were men! Safety pins definitely. I recall pinning through my shirt (or rather one I'd borrowed) and bra to hold it in place! Seem to remember at DD1's ceremony a couple of years ago that the 'hiring' people were helpful.
Will you be going for a meal after or any sort of celebration? It's a special day, you've worked hard. I suggest you forget MSE just this once!0 -
Im suprised you have to pay for your graduation tickets : Do you go to a small University?
It's the University of Sunderland so it's fairly big (3-4 campuses two massive libraries)....
We set up a campaign last year to stop them charging but it was overlooked by the university. It's only an hour ceremony! Apparently it's to pay for the champagne and buffet but we don't drink and we'd rather go elsewhere than pay 25 quid for a buffet! It's a total rip off but I guess the last thing the uni are going to squeeze from you.
Their argument is they allow up to six tickets (more if you're lucky) rather than some unis graduation that are free to attend but only allow MAX two tickets so it would be quite hard to decide if you had a broken up family who could attend.....Professional Photographer with a love of bargain hunting.. Are your guests paying for their tickets?0 -
Mine cost me a fortune. Gown was like £40 (same as you) and tickets were £25 a pot. I needed 3 tickets (mum, dad and boyfriend who put me through the course!). Mum and Dad said they had to come but never offered to give money towards the tickets.
Then the photo's, my mums old fasioned bit came out and she told me I HAD to get the professional photos done as my aunts and uncles would expect one. So I ordered them. I really wanted a nice pic of me and my boyfriend so ordered a couple one as well. Time I ordered copies of the photos for everyone who 'needed' one it came to over £150. I had to pay for this, and didn't have a choice in it.
Then my boyfriend got ill (seriously) and couldn't attend the ceremonyHe came for the photo but even now we don't have it on display as he looks terrible in it

Are your guests paying for their tickets?
No, i'm initially paying for them as they are my guests and i'm over the moon they are coming. Dad has said though that he will pay for his ticket on the day though I won't remind him or anything, that's just rude.Professional Photographer with a love of bargain hunting.. Might be worth checking out white blouses in Asda, as may be handy for a job interview in the future? Otherwise either your own smart dark trousers or skirt or a borrowed one.
Have a lovely time and congratulations that your hard work has paid off.0 -
Check your Uni's website re what you are requested to wear under your gown - when my ex-h graduated from Liverpool Uni, he HAD to wear a dark suit, my DS1's G/F HAS to wear a dark skirt or trouser suit for Leeds Uni.
And if you are having to pay £50 for the privilege of taking 2 guests, then I would seriously consider going to drink lots of champers & eat all the canapes!0 -
I remember the tickets for my B Sc graduation costing a fortune and so I decided not to go in the end - I asked them to post the certificate out to me! Same again, when I did my Post-grad diploma.
Having said that I had been to two previously (my nursing one, and my midwifery one) and made do with the informal photos on those occasions which were a lot nicer any way. Just paid for the robe hire.
I would agree with the other posters about plain blouse and trousers under the robes. Enjoy your day!0 -
Im Uni of Shef, so fairly massive (25,000 students when I started but probably more now) and you're right about us getting 2 tickets. You can apply for more if you have the need for one - younger sibling, for example, who can't be left at home on their own. Although, the ceremony is broadcast in realtime on a vvvvvvvvvvv large screen in several other buidlings distributed throughout the Uni so anyone can watch you graduate they just won't be in the same room. This is what my fiance and brother will be doing as the tickets were given to my mum and dad. We get a buffet and champagne reception included - not that I can take advantage of it this year. Even if I could drink, im not sure I would. For me, my graduation is about me and my family and we are all going out for a meal instead of the buffet.
I'm not planning on having any prof pictures done as it really is just a massive rip off. Plus I think more relaxed ones look better.
Boo to Uni of Sunderland and their charging!0
