Graduation Money saving?

Hi all,
Just booked my graduation from my BA Photography, Video and Digital Imaging degree.....
I'm normally such a moneysaver but if I wanted to attend with any guests it cost £25 per ticket, so I got one for my Dad and one for my partner..... The robes to hire for a couple of hours (which we MUST wear or we are not allowed to partake in the ceremony) were £39.... and I don't know how i'm gonna pay that (maybe credit card) and live for the next few weeks before payday....my degree show is costing into the hundred pounds and I did save a lot of money through that - not going to a professional framers and getting nice frames from IKEA instead....
Anyway I now have to make sure I look nice on the day and don't have any money left.... I also have to live through the next few weeks... has anyone got an ideas? I get paid in about three weeks or so.
I think I have some smart clothes to wear under robes though was thinking of borrowing some from a friend maybe to save money?
Is there anything else I need to take into consideration for the day?
I'm going to have lots of no spend days in order to make use of what's in the cupboard and stuff cause money cannot escape my bank account unless absolutely necessary.
Cheers for your imput

check the rules first - you may only be allowed to wear certain colours (i had to be in a black or navy suit!).
head over to old style for lots of ideas about using only storecupboard basics for meals!:happyhear0 -
I can understand you having to pay for hire of the robes as it will be done by an external company but to charge £25 a ticket for guests is ridiculous!
Graduation ceremonies aren't exactly the most interesting of things to attend.0 -
Have you factored in photographs?
I did pay out for a professional one but in my expereince there will be time between getting the robes and the ceremony so there should be oppurtunity to take pictures yourself (this would save money).
i wouldn't worry about what you wear under the robe, as you won't see it. I just had a shirt and skirt (and heels) that i already had on.
If you're going for a celebratory meal after, (if Dad isn't paying) have a look on the deals/vouchers section of the site and you could probably find vouchers to make it cheaper.
Foodwise head over to the oldstyle food board-they know their stuff and will be able to help you plan a cheap menu/shopping list. personally i find pasta to be the best MSE food!
is there anyway you can save anymore money on your degree show? This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -

I don't want to pay anyone to take photos of me cause it seems ironic considering I just got a degree in photography. The cheapest package for two photos is £30 and has to be paid in advance so I can't even decide after seeing the pics. I can just use my snazzy camera and instruct my Dad on it
Cheers for the advice concerning food, sure I can persuade my Dad into getting us a pub meal
I don't think there's anyway to save more money on my show. We were supposed to pay upwards of £50 each to appear in the catalogue and I refused, but according to uni funding my name, email and website has to appear in it so i got that for free, just not two of my photographs and artist statement. I also didn't go to a professional framers which would have been around £150, instead getting my frames from IKEA at a cost of £56. I'm also printing my images at university myself, which is costing £36 for the paper, instead of over £130 quid from a professional, so really £92 instead of £330, think i've done well :-D I know I WILL loose some marks because my work won't have as much as professional finish but hey ho, it's not fair but it's the way it works!Professional Photographer with a love of bargain hunting.. Stupid suggestion when it comes to photos. You did a photography course, I presume you have friends from the course who would be willing to take a pic of you and your dad at graduation...
Also surely its cheating to get a pro to print you work.... Extra marks in my book.
On a more serious note. I think the others have pointed you in most appropriate directions. If you need smart clothes, don't forget charity shops, you might find a suitable bargin. Also dare I say it, potentially ask your dad for a bit of help. My parents took the attitude you only graduate once, so bought the photos and meal (although on the photos thats mainly cus they wanted them and I was happy without).0 -
Can you get your Dad to pay for the tickets and robes etc. as a graduation gift to make it a little easier on your bank balance. Or even ask him to loan you the money until you get paid - I know it's difficult to ask, but I'm sure he would rather cut back on his own spending then see you suffer. I know how you feel about the final exhibitions/ displays/printing etc. - my architecture exhibition cost £300 and has left me unable to afford food and barely able to buy electricity!! Its the price we pay to do what we love eh...! Good luck.0

My gown is costing me £39 for hire, £21 for 2 tickets, so before photo's I am already £60 down! I have not bothered with photographs. You only had a choice between the £140 set with frames ect or £20 family group pics! I didn't want either, I just wanted 2 copies of 1 graduation print of me for my Dad and my Auntie. So I didn't bother, my Dad is going to take pics so I won't have to queue for ages or spend a fortune. Bought the smart skirt I am wearing for £4 including p&p from ebay and will probably by a blouse from there too.0

Which Universities make you pay for tickets to graduation? Name and shame!
I have attended two Universities and not had to pay for tickets.0 -

I need to pay to graduate, but then I think that is the case for all of the Scottish Ancients. In order to graduate I need to pay to become a member of the General Council of the university. Tickets are free though.0 -

Luckily my parents agreed to pay! This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0
