Wireless with dial up broadband?

I warn everyone I'm totally useless with tech stuff - it took my son 2 attempts to explain the difference between types of broadband! Anyways I have dial up broadband with Tiscali (Talktalk) which I have a sagem modem connecting to my laptop via usb, what I would like is wireless so that I no longer have to be attached to the modem (Via a wire)! I bought a wireless router (Belkin) before my son explained how dial up worked and have discovered I can't use it for obvious reasons - is their anyway of making my laptop wireless with my dial up broadband? I hope this has made sense to someone?

Hi there. What you need is a "wireless modem designed for a BT line". If you do not have a "wireless enabled" computer, you will also need a "wireless dongle". If you go to any of the main retailers, they should be able to provide you with this.In the beginning, the universe was created. This made a lot of people very angry and was widely regarded as a bad move. The late, great, Douglas Adams.0

There is no such thing as dial up broadband - are you referring to broadband delivered over a BT line rather than cable?0

Sorry but it was described to me as dial up broadband but yes I have my telephone and broadband from Tiscali/Talktalk (they supply the line as well) via my telephone line. The router I purchased is MicraDigital 802.11g ADSL modem with wireless router and it says it's compatible with Broadband internet via BT based telephone lines and my laptop is wireless enabled:o

Have you read the instructions or ran the set up disk that came with your modem/router?
Essentially you need to connect the router to the phone line.
Attach one of its ethernet ports to an ethernet port on your PC or laptop, there is usually a network cable supplied with the modem.
Then either run the setup programme, or log on to the router and enter your username and password that you had for your USB set up.
You should now be able to get back on line.
The next step is to set up the wireless access.
Some help from the Belkin site:-

OP, you first need to first clarify how you receive your internet (is it dial up or broadband?). Not sure if TT still offer a dial up service?
Can you use your phone line for calls at the same time that you are online? If so then you have broadband. If not, then you are on dial up.
If you are still on dial up, then your new wireless router is useless, as it will only work with broadband.
If so then suggest you upgrade to broadband ASAP, as dial up is now virtually obsolete and you can have broadband for as little as a fiver a month.
Subject to that, does your laptop have built in wireless (all modern laptops do, older ones may not).No free lunch, and no free laptop

Good point Mr M, OP is your modem one of these?

I have broadband via my phoneline and yes I can use my telephone at the same time as using my laptop. The way my son described it is that my laptop still has to dial up to get on line and with the router it can't happen? My laptop is wireless enabled since I can bring up a page showing all my neigbours wireless lines (they are all password protected).
I believe my son's confused and that I should be able to set up the router so who's right!
Yes thats the one

The OP is talking about ADSL, and at the moment has a USB modem that initiates the connection by using a "pseudo" dial up networking connection. There is no such thing as dial up broadband - are you referring to broadband delivered over a BT line rather than cable?
@ Madmonk,
All you need is an ADSL Router, such as the Netgear DG834G
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Netgear-DG834G-54Mbps-Wireless-Firewall/dp/B0000TZ8Z8
The router itself will make & maintain the connection, all you need to do is enter your Tiscali user credentials one time only and the connection will be "always on" for as long as the router is powered up.
Once the router is installed & configured, you can uninstall your USB modem and remove the current "dial up" connection you have.Remember kids, it's the volts that jolt and the mills that kill.0 -
Yes thats the one I'm using at the moment!0

Cheers MM, in that case there is no reason why your modem router cannot be used.
Give it a whirl.
Remember you need your username and password (Not the one you use for email). That gum you like is coming back in style.0
