OK I'm all updated, discs made, scanned and ccleanered.
I've attempted HijackThis but a message pops up about being denied access to write to the hosts file.
Bit confused and dunno where to find the log!

    Help me please!

you usually don't need to Cclean and hijackthis scan a brand new machine.... but if you must its probably down to permissions in which case right click and select 'run as administrator' on the relevant program.

How about running hijack this log as then you can see what's running?

JasX - I'm sure you are right, but as you see I was simply doing what was suggested by The Grandmaster, as quoted above.

To be honest, there are loads of things the guy seems to have put on or are default to new Sony's, including McAfee, and something to do with Norton, and loads of things like that.
Plus earlier I ran the Vaio update utility and it has altered the 'Vaio Gate' so it now appears as an annoying Rss feed thingy with scrolling news and suggestions. I'd like to undo that if possible :(

Anyway, thanks JasX, the run as administrator worked, I will post logfile in another post below.

    is bad too?

Google toolbar: do you use it?

And a general question what things vaio related can be removed too? I would be interested to know what can go as I also use a vaio.

Why IOBit Smartdefrag when Windows 7 defrags anyway? I got well told off by a popular adviser on this site for having this installed.
Personally can't see the sense in all the Windows Live stuff unless you are actually going to use them.

Because IOBit Smartdefrag does a better job. It is as good as Diskeeper.

Hmm, well I find it handy to have Google toolbar at the top but its only really the autofill and the google search feature I tend to use on the desktop. Not decided really, I know lots of people complain about Google but they seem to own everything nowadays, its partly what puts me off trying any of the new browsers, I find it irritating that there are so many browsers preinstalled on this laptop (ready for me to sign up and install properly) that so far I have just been using IE :p

Would be interesting to know what is made of the HijackThis log still...

How can it do a better job? I have run Smartdefrag and it only picks up tiny bits of defragmentation, double digits at most, which would be cleaned up daily anyway. You are simply adding to the clutter and possible confusion. As I said, greater minds than mine ( who post and advice constantly on here) pointed that out to me.

Smart defrag is a good tool and one I use. I think people get overly worried about having to defrag and diskclean etc all the time, really unless you are constantly doing disk intensive work (image manipulation, video editing etc) then defragging once a month along with a disk cleanup is fine. If defrag is run fairly often (i.e. every couple of weeks) then it probably wont pick up much.

Smart defrag is not too cluttering, it can also be set to defrag automatically in the background and wont slow your machine to a crawl while its working. It also runs a shed load faster than the built in defragger! :)

Another piece of stuff cluttering up the hard drive and running in the background. Clever. :rotfl:
